Default Cabin Air Filter

So today I was messing with the car and decided to take a look at the cabin air filter. Car is a 2010 coupe with 12,000 miles on it.
This is what I found;

Yikes!!
Needless to say, it got tossed and replaced with a new one.

they are supposed to be changed at 10-15,000 miles.NAPA auto parts has them for like 12 bucks or so as opposed to 60 at the dealer.

Underhood, passangerside firewall, small metal clips hold it in. It just slides out toward the front of the car. I cleaned mine with compressed air and reinserted.

That looks beautiful, compared to some others I've seen. Including ours at 18k miles.
Have you seen the pic of one with a dead mouse imbedded in it?

Cabin air filters are also available with activated carbon. Helps eliminate some of the odors that can plague these cars.

Looks good compared to mine also. And there was also a problem at the factory with many of these. The slot is not big enough or the filter is too big and many people have found that the factory folded these when installing them. It doesn't hurt to check the condition even on a brand new car.

That's aboput how my filter looked at 15K.

Local NAPA store here wanted $20+ and the quality wasn't very good. The weak framing (thicker, stiffened filter material) on the outside of the filter made it want to bunch up in the slot on install like an accordian. The filter holder track has a slight curve to it which seemd to cause it to jamb up. Got a Purolator from Pep Boys that was better made with a thicker border piece that was easy to install without the filter wanting to bunch up.

I didn't even think to check my cabin air filter when I bought the car last summer. I pulled it out a few weeks ago while I was looking for the source of an oil leak (oil pan gasket, fixed under warrant. yay) and it looked like it had never been touched since the factory installed it in 2007. So I called Kragen and ordered two K&N filters for the intake and a new cabin air filter which this thread reminded me that I need to stop and pick up on my way home

This made me check mine today. Wow! I don't think it's ever been changed. It's black and hairy looking. Lol.

I found my original bent. When I tried to install the new one pushing on the end it wanted to bend. I gripped it on both sides and slowly worked it in. Later! Frank
