In terms of usability, I haven't seen one from any automaker that is as good as an iPhone running the Navigon app. It's about $40.00 if you have an iPhone.

I only ask because a while back I bought a Magellan to use for when I need to rent a car.
It was a $400.00 unit on sale for $200.00.
I presumed it would have a lot of capabilities originally being a $400.00 GPS.
I was shocked it wouldn't do anything beyond punching in the destination and following the directions.
It showed which lanes to be in and would re-route me if I took different turns etc.
But my personal experience with all the Factory NAV units, those features are a given.
Do the inexpensive Garmin units do more than most other brand units ?
Thanks in Advance for any info
I don't know what you mean by inexpensive but my $159 Garmin does everything the Vette NAV does and more, easier. It also gives me traffic info and alternate directions if desired and it has lifetime updates, no additional $200 for an up-to-date disk. By the way, it also has Bluetooth capability.

Most (but not all) of the cellphone navigation apps, get the map data real-time from the phone data system. That's usually great, but it also means they won't work if you are somewhere without cellphone coverage. Had that happen last month in a remote area of Florida, riding with a friend who had Ipad and i had Iphone. Both systems quit working at the same place. Not sure about the Navigon.

Last time I looked, all the Iphone nav apps I found that actually store the maps in the phone itself and will work anywhere, got poor reviews for other reasons. Suggest reading reviews and checking that issue before purchase.

We've been using the RM Large Print versions for several years; but as you pointed out later, they actually have less information on them than the old fashioned small-print versions.

Although I'm happy with our C6 nav (or our two Garmins, or our two cellphones), I always carry and use paper maps. Very annoying that no one makes really good maps of all the states.

Actually, it doesn't.

We have two Garmins and like them, but the C6 nav:
Puts turn instructions and distance on the HUD.
Mutes the music when giving voice commands.
Gives a choice of 3 routes when you input a destination.
Allows you to enter business destinations by phone number.
Has a larger screen.
Comes installed in the car, no wires or mounting issues.
Covered by 3/36 and GMPP warranty.
Eliminates worries about broken windows and theft.
Etc.

In other words, the C6 nav will do some things the Garmin won't, and the Garmin will do some things the C6 nav won't. There is no such thing as a perfect nav system, each person needs to think about how they use the car and the nav, then get what is most appropriate for themselves.

Here's another vote for iPhone/Navigon. Easy to use, lots of bells and whistles, and very accurate. Maps are stored in the phone and the internal GPS is used, so there's never an issue of having to be in a cell coverage area.

I agree with you that the Nav. in the Corvette is not very user friendly, nor is it even accurate in its instructions. However , it does have some value, as the nav. screen is an ideal place to attach the Garmin suction cup. The very reasonably priced Garmin beats every facet of the original Corvette nav.

Also ideal for a place to put stickem notes. They fall off the rough dashboard.

Id say $159.00 is inexpensive

What I was wondering though is if the Garmin is better / has more features etc,. than other "similar" GPS units such as Magellan and Tom Tom.

I certainly wouldn't recommend a Magellan to anyone after using the one I bought.
I'd have to presume a Magellan model with more features than the one I bought would cost more than I'd want to spend if comparing price to the one I bought is any comparison
I say that because the one I bought wasn't originally selling for cheap money and it sucks

IMO this NAV app does it and there are no expensive annual updates.

I've heard good things about the (free) Google NAV app for android phones. I rode in a friend's Caddy and I think he used OnStar NAV. I don't much like Apple or Google (i.e., the Borg) but like them or not they do certain things well.

There are options...good luck!
Google Maps / Navigation provides world-class navigation service for FREE. I am not sure if it's available on iPhone, but it certainly is for all Android phones.

I was going to get Navigon North America for both our Iphones. But within the last month, the reviews have gone seriously downhill; scathingly bad. Apprently a recent update has virtually killed the system for many users. Can I get some comments from people using Navigon right now?
