Navigation sucks!!!
How do they compare to other units like Magellan etc?
I only ask because a while back I bought a Magellan to use for when I need to rent a car.
It was a $400.00 unit on sale for $200.00.
I presumed it would have a lot of capabilities originally being a $400.00 GPS.
I was shocked it wouldn't do anything beyond punching in the destination and following the directions.
It showed which lanes to be in and would re-route me if I took different turns etc.
But my personal experience with all the Factory NAV units, those features are a given.
Do the inexpensive Garmin units do more than most other brand units ?
Thanks in Advance for any info

Last time I looked, all the Iphone nav apps I found that actually store the maps in the phone itself and will work anywhere, got poor reviews for other reasons. Suggest reading reviews and checking that issue before purchase.

Although I'm happy with our C6 nav (or our two Garmins, or our two cellphones), I always carry and use paper maps. Very annoying that no one makes really good maps of all the states.

We have two Garmins and like them, but the C6 nav:
Puts turn instructions and distance on the HUD.
Mutes the music when giving voice commands.
Gives a choice of 3 routes when you input a destination.
Allows you to enter business destinations by phone number.
Has a larger screen.
Comes installed in the car, no wires or mounting issues.
Covered by 3/36 and GMPP warranty.
Eliminates worries about broken windows and theft.
Etc.
In other words, the C6 nav will do some things the Garmin won't, and the Garmin will do some things the C6 nav won't. There is no such thing as a perfect nav system, each person needs to think about how they use the car and the nav, then get what is most appropriate for themselves.

Absolutely outstanding post.

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts

What I was wondering though is if the Garmin is better / has more features etc,. than other "similar" GPS units such as Magellan and Tom Tom.
I certainly wouldn't recommend a Magellan to anyone after using the one I bought.
I'd have to presume a Magellan model with more features than the one I bought would cost more than I'd want to spend if comparing price to the one I bought is any comparison

I say that because the one I bought wasn't originally selling for cheap money and it sucks
I've heard good things about the (free) Google NAV app for android phones. I rode in a friend's Caddy and I think he used OnStar NAV. I don't much like Apple or Google (i.e., the Borg) but like them or not they do certain things well.
There are options...good luck!
