Document fees are not legit. The dealer is just steeling money. GM pays them to sell the cars.
You couldn't be more incorrect. GM, Ford and Chrysler "book" the sale when the cars leave the factory. The dealer then needs to floor plan the inventory. Period.
Illinois and some other states limit doc fees by law. 2012 max is $161.39 here in Illinois. I agree with those who say it's the overall bottom line that counts. A dealer is entitled to make a profit, too, just like the rest of us -- I just want all the info to be open and straight-forward. My biggest objection has always been to the "hidden" stuff, like the difference between dealer invoice and actual dealer cost.
I work for a dealership and we have a $125 doc fee. A doc free is charged by the dealership and not required by law. We use it to pay our accounting staff to process all paperwork with the state. Anything more then $150-175 is too much.

...that doesn't sound unreasonable, IMO. I've paid $100 --$200 doc fees in the past. Thx for sharing...
From one cop to another, seriously call Tommy at MacMulkin. His prices are crazy low with ABSOLUTELY no fees of ANY kind. I ordered and bought this 2012 GS 4LT that stickered for 72K for an even 60K and 0% financing for 5 years. He'll even ship it to your house. Many, many forum members have also done it. I shopped this car for months before going with MacMulkin and NOBODY could beat him.
I was trying to make a deal on a used 12 GS a few weeks ago. On the worksheet, the dealer had a $119 "private tag agency fee" and then farther down on another line, had the audacity to tack on another $399 charge for "tag and titles fees". They also advertise proudly that they only charge a $99 "dealer fee". Wow, they must pay their title clerks well. Basically, that is tacking on another $500 to the deal. Kinda insulting to my intelligence if you ask me. We all know what the state charges for a title- about $100 here in Fla. You want my business, just add $500 to the price of the car and if the deal is right, I'll buy. I didn't even get that far to argue those points as they were asking too much to begin with for the car they were trying to sell me IMHO. And dealers wonder why they're sucking air.
Was it Stingray Chevrolet, be looking in a few weeks heard good things about them so if them will be wary.
