Just tell them right up front you are not paying a doc fee. If they fight about it take your business elsewhere.

I guess it depends on the overall deal you've negotiated. If the OTD price (with a huge DOC FEE) is lower than your OTD from another dealer (with a low DOC FES) than what does it matter?

It's the OTD price that matters.

That's not entirely true. Hendrick charges fees.

Tommy Jr. (MacMulkin) does not charge any fees. Plus he's usually got a price that cannot be beat. It's what we call a win-win.

Locally here all the dealers charge outrageous fees. It's a scam and I try to discourage it (by loudly swearing at them) whenever possible.

Yes, I bought my car through Tommy Jr.

Are you saying that unless the dealership sells a car the accounting staff just hangs out for free.Don't believe I won't to work there, without the accounting dept. nothing gets paid or collected. Are they on commission too. What I'm saying is that is part of doing business if you bought clothes or food would you pay a fee for the cashier to ring it up?

They can charge $1000 doc fee if the out the door price is right. I don't care.

If you make the deal with no doc fee you'll just pay it in the price.

It's amazing the things I read and see on this site. In MI the fees is regulated at 190 by the state. Not a bad #, if the out the door price is right. In most cases if I agree on a # they can make the doc fee 0 or 190 I don't care. Worrying about what they do with such a small % of the cost doesn't bother me, since I care only what the grand total cost is. I don't waste the enegy fussing over how they break it down on their end.

The dealership will tell you that its purpose is to cover the administrative cost assicated the sale and the compliance with state regulations.

It really is just another way for the dealership to make an extra buck.

I have negotiated it out of the sale.

I agree, but it must work for them or else they wouldn't be trying. I wonder how many people see this stuff printed on the contract and assume it's non-negotiable...

My favorite was walking into a dealer looking for a specific color vehicle, which they didn't have. I was told they would be willing to 'find' one for me but there was an extra $100 fee. So let me get this straight - you don't have the car I came to buy in stock so I get penalized $100?

Only Chevy dealer in this town had the "3" taped over on their sign and replaced with a "4"...that's right, "$499 Processing Fee". No wonder prospective buyers turn around and walk....

OTD is all that matters. These doc fees are another way for dealers to "undersell" via advertised discounted prices, then recoup profit with an add on. It's all about marketing - just negotiate the best OTD price you can.
