Never pay a doc or any other kind of fee, make a deal then when they try to add on the fee's tell them "no way" most of the time they will forget about it if not go get the car someplace else.
Really $399 is cheap compared to what they try to get around here. But, I agree with above, leave that out of your offer. I heard it goes to the sales manager, and accused one of that and he wouldn't deny it
I was trying to make a deal on a used 12 GS a few weeks ago. On the worksheet, the dealer had a $119 "private tag agency fee" and then farther down on another line, had the audacity to tack on another $399 charge for "tag and titles fees". They also advertise proudly that they only charge a $99 "dealer fee". Wow, they must pay their title clerks well. Basically, that is tacking on another $500 to the deal. Kinda insulting to my intelligence if you ask me. We all know what the state charges for a title- about $100 here in Fla. You want my business, just add $500 to the price of the car and if the deal is right, I'll buy. I didn't even get that far to argue those points as they were asking too much to begin with for the car they were trying to sell me IMHO. And dealers wonder why they're sucking air.
So I paid a little over 42K for a brand new 08 1LT and the dealer charged me 199 doc fee. I surely could have spent another 2-3K and avoided a doc fee but at the end of the day that is kinda cutting off my nose to spite my face. For me it's all about "out the door" cost. How they work the numbers, I honestly don't care. YMMV. BTW, my car stickered for 50,140

Without mentioning dealer name wasbthat the one in Plant City, was thinking about buying new from them either 2011 or 2012 base. Have not been there yet just website, the 2012 is only about $1700 more then the 2011. Their prices seem very good as well as 2 dealerships in miami area.
.
Went into the dealer to buy a 2009 Z06. Came to a price - cool. Looked at the papers and there was a $500 document fee on it. I told the guy it was a shame that the deal was killed over $500. The doc fee disappeared and the car is in my garage.
Fees are getting real stupid with just about everything. Rental car for example was $350, $150 in fees. Hotel $1k, another $100 in fees. Airlines, cell phones, phones, TV, etc, etc, etc.
$150-200 doc fees is high but I'll pay it. I won't pay for $500 extras that just pad their profit. Plus actual price out the door is what counts the most. One forum dealer here use to charge around $700 doc fees to counter his best price on this site. Given the choice to buy from two dealers with the same price though I'll take the one with low fees.
