What 'bout the 1917 288 C.I. Chevrolet big block?
Or was it really a small block, shrouded in a bore center measurement cover-up.

Remember in around 1970 (give or take) didn't they make both a 400 small block and 400 big block at the same time? Or maybe I'm thinking a 400 small block at the same time they made the 396 big block- yeah, I think that's what I'm thinking.

I remember that - in 1970 I ordered a Chevelle SS with a 400 small block but the plant didn't have any SS 400 emblems, so they stuck a 396 big block in it, slapped SS 396 emblems on it and the Dealer gave me a 4 cu in refund

I believe you are thinking about the Pontiac line of engines. The same engine(same bore spacing) was used for displacements ranging from 326 ci to 455 ci.
The Buick 350 had a bore spacing of 4.25 inches and the Buick 400-430, 455 had a bore spacing of 4.75 inches.

I would say it depends on the road course. A tight course with short straights, the GS would be close to the Z06, but the Rolex 24 course at Daytona Beach, the Z06 would leave the GS in the dust as it has almost 2.5 miles of high speed banked turns and long straights with about a mile of infield, with a short straight between the hairpins, but that straight is still long enough for the Z06 to out accelerate the GS.

That information probably comes from the C&D "Lightening Lap" where they tested the GS with the newer generation GY Supercar tires the year after they tested the Z06 with the older generation tires. Having said that, logic says that if HP is not a factor, they actually should be close in pure handling.
