I am a C5 owner looking at a 2005 C5 with 5000 miles.
Are there any bug a boo's with the first year C6 that
I would want to stay away from. Love my C5 but parts will
become an issue. Looking for guidance from the C6 crowd
on the 05"s
I have an 05 (A4) that I bought in 07... I drag race it very often, & have been lucky I haven't had to replace any drive-train parts other than tires...
Yes some people have had issues with the 05 (weak rear) but most who break the rear do it on street tires when trying to drag race it and get "wheel Hop"... the SHOULD let off the gas and push in the clutch INSTANTLY, but for some unknown reason they try to make a run and break the rear...
I bought my car with about 5000 miles on it.. now I have 45,000 & its still running fine..
Others will chime in about DBS (Dead Battery Syndrome) not putting a manual in Reverse when parking it...
But you will find a LOT of happy campers here who own 05 (C6) Vetts..
Just do a search for 2005 problems in the C6 forum section. The problems associated with the 2005 model year are well documented along with the fixes needed. I have owned 25 vettes from all 6 generation and have had first year cars from 4 or those generations and without a doubt the first year cars were the biggest headaches by far for me.
The advantage is that you can pick up a very low mile 2005 coupe in the mid to low $20k range, if they are looking for more than that I would look to a later year for about the same money. I have a friend up in Phoenix that picked up a 2007 coupe with nearly every option 2 years ago from the original owner with 6,600 miles on it for $27k.
Do a search for "service column lock" for 2005. It was a carryover problem that affected the earlier C5's as well, and GM knew about it. This only affected the 2005 MY. I had the dreaded "service column lock" message come up on my DIC recently, luckily it was just a loose negative battery cable and after I tightened it, haven't had it come back again.
I've previously owned 2 C5's, a 99 & 04 Commemoritive and recently moved up this 2005 C6 with 9k miles on it. The added horsepower & torq is excellent on the C6's. The only thing I am required to do so as to not effect the battery is to shut it down being in REVERSE gear.
You can't forget because the vette will chime and display " shift into reverse gear" . I researched the 05's alot and there was nothing that would have swayed me away from them. I paid 33k for it but convertibles are more than coups, especially here in Florida. SO it was a no brainer for me. What's even nicer is that the vehicle is pretty much identical to the later C6 years up to 2013. A 2005 C6 with 5k miles on it???? Brand new as far as I would say,
I would be slightly worried about a car that age with such few miles on it though, I personally think that cars that sit for long periods of time without being driven can develop a lot of odd problems.
Honestly,I loved my 05 but I'd look for an 06 if I were you. Different steering wheel and a stronger rear end! Not to mention if you're looking for a manual much less chance of DBS.ALSO,XM ANTENNA IN THE MIRRORS instead of on the roof.

That's exactly why I didn't buy an '05, ended up with a new '07. The shark fin on the roof really took the look away for me.
Good luck, & you'll enjoy the ride!

Reason: Wrong salute.

It depends where the car was stored and how long the periods of no use were. I bought a 2007 convert 2 years ago that spent it's entire life in the dry Tucson climate ( there is a reason why the military stores all their long term storage planes here ). The car I bought was 4 1/2 years old when I bought it but was driven only 2,751 miles but was driven every week or two so did not sit for extended periods. I have had no problems other than a new battery and no leaks in the 6,000 miles I have driven it over the last two years.
My son is with Mercedes and the cars they see with nagging electrical and fluid leaking related problems are the ones that are parked for months at a time over the summer while their owners are living in their other homes up North.

I've owned (4) MB vehicles and I can tell you they don't have to sit for any time to have substantial problems!

The dealer he is with also sells multiple other brands such as Porsche, Honda, BMW, Chevrolet, Volkswagen, Audi, Ford, etc. and from what he tells me the problems are not related to a single brand but to the long term storage and non use of a car for 2 months or longer.
I have 05, and love it, had no off the wall problems, the shifter was the only replacement I had replaced.
Have Chevy dealership run the vin number to see the maintenance of the car, and this way you can see if they had any problems, plus see how the car was serviced in it's lifetime.
