The 1-4 skip shift is design simply to increase gas mileage during the very specific parameters of the EPA gas mileage test that all cars must go through. The only reason that it can be done is because the Corvette has enough torque and light enough weight to allow the car to still be driven with the skip of second and third gears. If the skip shift was not there, we would all be paying a gas guzzler tax on the car...simple. As I understand it, the ZR1 was simply not able to meet fuel economy standards no matter what, and so it was hit with the tax. So the skip shift has nothing to do with the way we drive the Vette, it was conceived, and the computer programmed, to extend fuel economy in a very specific government test. It does this very well as there is no other car around that goes as fast as the C6 and still has no gas guzzler tax applied to it. We should all be applauding the skip shift...it is a brilliant device. I'll take it over a $1,500 tax anytime.

Ok guys, I have found something that may work for you all with the manual tranny and don't have the CAGS eliminator installed. Found it purely by accident. I noticed when my 1 to 4 light came on I could pull my shifter out of first and instead of shifting into fourth I ever so slightly pushed it forward as if I was going to shift it back into first and I felt the gate open allowing me to then shift into second instead of first. I got so good at it that it became second nature and although the light would come on I could trick it into opening the gate. I don't know if it works on all M6's but it did on mine. Like I said I found it by accident and from then on it became habit and was never an issue. Just wanted to relay this info for those of you that would like to experiment and see if you can do the same.
Cheers.
That is an interesting discovery, but I'm not sure I'd want to do it as a permanent thing. For what it's worth, the owners manual states:
Notice: When shifting gears, do not move the shift lever around unnecessarily. This may damage the transmission. Shift directly into the next gear.
I have no idea what damage could be done, if any, but I wouldn't chance it given the other easy solutions.

Well stated and great point, cclive!
p.s. but I was glad to pay the gas guzzler tax so I could get to drive a ZR1. After three years of driving bliss, I have only encountered that skip shift BS once.
Or you could simply increase the rpm's a bit more, the light goes away and you can easily shift into 2nd. There is a very narrow rpm band which forces you into the 1-to-4 shift. Continue to rev right through that band and you will never need a CAGS eliminator.
exactly, I have NEVER encountered the skip shift, perhaps if some old lady was driving the car …………...
