My 08 is running great...super great...120,000 miles..never used a battery tender unless I'm away for 4 months. Remember, the entire car's electrical system automatically shuts down in 15 minutes or so.

Hey I wonder if that auto-shutdown system can shut down the car while it's being driven???? <-----

Do you remember if this caused your dash to go black?

I hear ya. Every time I press the Start button I wonder.

And every time I move the shifter I assume it will either stay locked in Park or that the plastic bushing breaks, leaving me stuck either way.

So far, so good, 30,000 miles.

And, time goes on yet little changes. I remember back to my 59 Vette when I was in my 20s. Same thing. Every time I turned that key I wondered....

Hasn't changed my entire life, no matter what I am driving.

Here's the big difference: With an old car I could fix or jerry-rig it easily, usually on the side of the road if had a few tools with me.

That's hardly the case today.

EDIT: Plus, back then there were no fobs, ECMs, BCMs, interlocks, nannies, and endless other electronics to go haywire.

Different for me. I fixed it then and will fix it now. In ways, the fix is actually cleaner now than then. I just plug in the Tech 2, and sit back. It takes me to the problem.

Also, I am no longer laying on my back in the driveway with the car up on concrete blocks like then.

I'm really not thinking that the fuel pump is the true issue here. Usually the pumps just start dropping in pressure, not just quite all of a sudden and work again.

How would a bad fuel pump (or even bad power feed to the fuel pump) cause the entire dash to go black?

If you were a member of the online forum for your 4 cylinder daily driver, you would see numerous posts of bad things about the car. You would then be paranoid every time you went to start it.
