Default dropping subframes help

Hi,

I'm planning to drop both subframes on my zr1 as i'm going to freshen up the engine, transaxle, and replace the clutch. Does anyone have any links to step by step instructions or videos or anything else that could be beneficial?

I don't, yet, have a service manual but is one available in pdf form online?

Thanks guys!

Jeremy

With a C6 you don't have subframes. You have to disassemble the suspension components and steering. The C6 cars including the Z06 and ZR1 use full length frame rails.

Here's a few links to get you going. The front & rear cradles DO come off separate, tied together by the torque tube, no full frame. I used a 1000 lb lift table to remove my ZR1 rear cradle/diff/transmission recently & it worked really nice. I got it from Harbor freight (yeah I know, cheap but worked really well). Keep in mind you have to be careful about tipping the rear too low or you can damage the firewall if the back of the engine hits it (among numerous other things to watch out for).

Some type of service manual or subscription to alldata diy would be your best investment too, I think.

I think he's talking about the engine and transmission cradle.

Its not about dropping them per say, its about getting them back in lol. You can drop them down onto jack stands if you like.

The best bet is to fashion some sort of table or stand that can be adjusted to bolt everything back up as one unit, at least in my opinion. If you drop them onto stands and then something shifts, its going to be tough to line up the bolt holes again with all of the weight on stands.

thanks for the replies, guys. i have 2 1000lb pneumatic motorcycle lifts, so I think i'll use those. being it's all coming out, would you recommend dropping both cradles together simultaneously or pull the rear first along with the torque tube and leave the front separate?

Thanks again!

Drop together and then separate from the torque tube.

And if you decide to do it separate, and have it on a lift (or jack stands it puck locations), take precautions because it will be nose heavy if pulling the rear section or vise versa.

I used a stand at the front when I pulled the rear half out & also used t-hooks in the puck slots & chained it to the lift arms as a secondary precaution. Just a thought.

Sage advice if using a two-post lift. Too many examples of losing the entire car on a two-post when something really heavy comes off of one end.

Have plenty of hands on deck to help. I've done this solo, and it's a major PITA, but much easier, and faster, with help.
