Default Nav cooling fan

I've noticed that when my nav unit starts to malfunction I remove disc and it's very warm. Looking at pics of units on ebay I see they have cooling fans like computers. Anyone tried changing one of these?

Changing the cooling fan? Or the whole navigation unit? Lots of threads on replacing the navigation unit with either OEM or aftermarket.

No, I'm thinking the unit might be overheating due to bad fan. although I love the hud for turns I don't think I would invest in another head unit but I might take old one out and see if fan is working. It's a 2005 vert so maybe fan is clogged with dust? Was hoping someone has some knowledge on this.

I happen to have a spare Nav unit. I'll have a look and see what is doable without completely screwing the unit.
I'll post my findings in a few minutes

Good news is that the fan can be removed quite easily. The bad news is it may be difficult to get it plugged back in that connector in the void.
The other issue is finding a new fan that will fit.
The fan brackets that hold the rotating blades to the surround is really thin and easy to break. It can be removed without breaking them, as long as you pry on the bottom outside casing when removing from the void. There is enough give to remove the bottom screw and get it past the unit metal casing.

I took pics, so here they are.

The back of the assembly. 7 small screws and that Black locator have to be removed. The locator uses a 5/8" wrench.

Screws and locator to be removed as per red Arrows

Screws and locator and back plate removed to expose cooling fan

Remove the 2 screws holding fan in (as per arrows)

Fan removed from void

The only marking on the side of the fan assembly is this

The void and the white connector. The wires go on the left side of the void so as to not get impededcby the fan casing.

I did get it back in Ok using needle nose tweezers to get the wire plug reconnected in the void, but how hard is it going to be to find a replacement fan.

You can test the fan to see if it works using the connector and a 12v DC power supply.
As I mentioned, do not pry up where the blades are or the fan will be ruined. Pry from the bottom casing to get ot out.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

You really have gone above and beyond with this info, Thanks. When I return from my road trip I'll pull the head unit and see if I can tell if fan is running or not or very dirty etc. The nav disc gets very warm so it might be related....THANKS again.

Your welcome. I can't imagine that fan pushing much air to keep the unit completely cool. It only puts out 3.2 CFM, and the space behind the unit is enclosed and most likely gets heat transferring from the engine compartment. I know that the CD in my unit runs hot, but it doesn't stop it from playing. I do shoot cold compressed air from a can into the CD and NAV slots occasionally just to keep the inside of the unit from collecting too much dust, and trying to keep the laser lenses as clean as possible. BTW, it's impossible to get to the CD and NAV players without destroying the unit. I had access to a broken Nav unit, and I tried to get it apart to try to manually clean the laser lens, but it could not be accomplished, and get the unit back together without really ruining it. Parts of that unit is held with rivets, so they can't be undone without ruining stuff.
It was a fun project to try, but I knew it wasn't like I was ruining a good unit, so it was without any pressure.

Good luck
