I called my local chevy dealer today to get a price for windshield replacement. The dealer stated that the windshield would have to be ordered from the factory and would take about three days to be shipped. After asking a few questions, I was told that the new windshield would not have a GM marking/ stamp on it. He said GM doesn't make windshields. He said he could call the factory to find out what would be stamped on it. He also stated that the dealership subcontracts windshield install.
I just looked at my new GMC Denali windshield and it has GM Stamped on the windshield. The windshield currently in the corvette has the GM stamp and also has "HUD" for head up display.
How do I know if I am getting a HUD windshield if there are no stamps stating HUD.
I think the dealer may be pulling a quick bait and switch routine.
Anyone had aftermarket windshields installed with HUD marking on it.
Mine has a replacement windshield and it has no GM mark where the factory one has its ..its just blank there but it does have the HUD designation. I read where they are both made by the same company..I sure wouldn't get one from a GM dealer..not for $1400.00.. On my SSR I replaced the window twice on it. .and SSR fanatics are **** about having the GM window with the small SSR etched in the middle of it.. That was never a big deal for me..
Thanks for the safelite referral. Safelite could not tell me who the manufacturer would be or what marking it would have. I guess I am more concerned that the windshield has a HUD stamp on it. The difference in price for standard to HUD is about $300-400. Safelite price for HUD was a little over $900.

APTECH is the OEM manufacturer of the C6 Corvette glass parts ....
You can get one with the GM stamp in the bug but it will cost you upwards of around 40% premium over a non branded APTECH windshield ... same glass , made in the same plant , as the "Branded" part ....there is absolutely no difference between the two parts except you are paying for the GM logo
As far as HUD markings in the "BUG"...(BRANDING STAMP) . I am pretty sure that there is not a difference in the bug even though they have a different part number . I will check in the am
Most dealers do not install glass , they subcontract it out
The Corvette is not a hard install and you should not be able to tell its been installed ...if you can ...get another installer
Check your side pillar moldings as the rubber strip has a habit of tearing at the top, when you remove the molding sometimes it does not lay flat when reinstalled , Not a fault of the installer .... bad design on GM's part
SafeLite did mine a couple months ago, looks like the GM was buffed off that area, before install they ask what kind of windshield is needed, GPS box, HUD, ect. looks like mine was 1200 bucks, insurance covered it all as I have glass coverage on policy. you need it down here I average one windshield every two years or so ....

Thanks, for your reply. Sounds like you have some experience with windshield replacements. I just don't want to pay the additional money for HUD glass that is not marked as HUD.
Will the HUD display be fuzzy if I happen to get a non HUD windshield?? How will I know.

They (Safelite or installer) should ask if you need HUD, yes it will make a difference.

Thats what i have in my car ... no HUD , you will be hard pressed to tell the difference ......no need to pay the difference , ask your installer to bring both then have the installer " dry set" the glass for you to see .... i am confident you will agree ..
Yes i do have experience.... 30 years in manufacturing , distribution and installation

Really ..... have you seen both layed into a car at the same time to be able to make this statement......
I have .... and a lay person would be hard pressed to see any difference , the difference is in the refraction propreties of the interlayer....as the difference in brightness is slight at best ....

I've seen both, and the difference is very small. Small enough that when it comes time for my windshield I'll be buying the non-HUD one even though I have HUD.
So just what is the insurance co. obligation on replacing glass ? Seems like most insurance agents, mine included say that they will not replace with org. GM glass. But most glass installers say that it is law that the insurance co's can/must replace with org. equip (from manufacturer) if the owner of the vehicle wants it and not charge them an inflated price and/or deductible. This has been an on-going argument for a while now. Anyone have any good insight on this ?

If anyone knows, I'd sure like to hear the answer to this also!
