Okay, so I've had my car for 2 1/2 years and I just came to find out about two weeks ago that the car has an outside trunk release button by the back license plate. I for some reason always just thought it was some rubber grommet to seal up a spot.
Saw a video on YouTube where they were talking about it and I was like "What?" so I went and checked.
Sure enough there is.
BUT....
It does not seem to work well at all. Sometimes I push it and it will work but it seems like most of the time I try to push it, it does not work. Are they just inherently bad or is this just another warranty item to get fixed?
A lot of dirt swirls around back there and the contacts get dirty. It is an easy ten minute job to clean them up. Go back on You Tube and you will find videos on the fix. Easy and free.

If you follow the photos in the How-To link provided by GRCTampa and in 15 minutes you'll have a fully functioning release button again. All it takes is a Torx 15 screwdriver to remove the inboard passenger-side tail light and open an access hole close enough to reach the switch. Peel off the top of the button to expose the plunger. An old toothbrush and canned air will remove all of the collected fine grit and dust.
Reassemble and voila!
I'll Just wait till the next time i need to take it in. It's all under warranty so I'll not bother.
thanks four the information about the common dirt issues.

When you clean the button, you have to get it down to this level to clean it's gold color contact points as show on the left hand side pieces.
Sorry for the confusion, but I was looking for the article with pictures for how to remove, clean, and replace the rear hatch release button above the license plate. The How-To article on the Forum does not have the pictures. Thanks.
Here is a old forum member wrote up how to either replace the switch or clean the one you have in the car.
I will tell you mine hasn't worked in years, the instructions are good, took 20 minutes from start to finish.
The switch was filled with dirt, so much the button wouldn't work, till I pulled it a part and cleaned the dirt out.
