pitting in chrome? sounds more serious than just a cleaner or treatment.
I use Mother's spray on chrome wheel cleaner. The instructions are to spray it on the wheels and rinse it off right away. Not sure if that applies here.
There are several chrome cleaners that will do a great job of getting the chrome clean, and as others have said, won't do a thing to address pitting. The key point is to follow up with a good chrome polish to protect them. The best solution I have found is Chemical Guys Wheel Guard. Once my wheels were clean as new, I coated, let dry, buffed off, then repeated - with wheels off the car. That was over a year ago. Now I just do a weekly dry wipe with plush microfiber and the brake dust wipes right off, leaving them clean as new. I expect to re-coat this fall, but it worked better than anything else to keep them protected and easy to clean.

Both Simichrome and Adam's two-step metal polish do a great job on chrome. Neither can do anything about the pitting, but the Adam's has some sort of wax in it already so it does protect as well.
Try using some "Buffalo wool" , #0000 steel wool as an applicator and no it wont scratch them, I've used it for years.
I have heard told that wadded up aluminum foil works on removing rust also ??
