I'm having a problem with the screw that holds my 8-ball style shift **** in place backing itself out and off of the shifter, which causes it to rattle like crazy. I was thinking about putting a dab of blue Loctite on the screw to hold it in place, but am a little worried about being able to remove the screw later on when I finally get around to installing a short shifter. The screw requires a pretty small allen wrench to remove/tighten it, and I'm worried about stripping it out. Does anyone have any other ideas on what I might do to resolve this problem?
hey...make sure its not the fitting in the shiftier **** rattling before you lock it down...That fitting that mates the ball to the shiftier can rattle too...The ball rattles on the fitting and not the shifter handle.... (it can sometimes) That is plenty of screw to hold the **** on the shifter. imo
I'm ordering one from Speed Dawg shift ***** this week for this very reason...My ball shifter **** rattles in two gears of you hand isn't on it lol..

It's definitely the shifter. I can move it around, and it stops rattling when I put my hand on it.
I had to put a bit of paper (YIKES) in my aftermarket **** to stop it from rattling. Just a bit of extra space in there to rattle at certain RPMs. Drove me crazy!
Also, that screw head stripped on mine. Had to dremmel a slit to use a flathead on it. Aftermarket screws CF directed me to at lowe's didn't fit under the boot. I'd say make sure the **** fits TIGHT on the shift lever then blue locktight and tighten it GOOD

Mine does too....except its tight on the stick. I even crammed a bunch of those foam earplugs in the hole.... Mine is black and I bought it form a forum vendor years and years ago...still looks new but I like white better and speed dawg quality and service rocks..

I too have an old school "8 ball style shift ****". It rattled like crazy despite my efforts with tightening. I carefully measured the "clear" space after inserting the shaft of the shifter. I filled the **** with epoxy to "close" to the point of contact to the shaft. This solved my rattle problem except at very high load with high rev's.
In your case I would just use blue Loctite on the set screw with a "domed" washer (That's what I did at first). Your bolt/washer will not come loose and it will always be tight YMMV
blue loctite. a little dab over a few threads and itll be removable. Just use the correct TIGHT allen key made by a reputable company (i.e., wiha) and you will be totally fine.
Purple loctite might be what you need. It is make for small set screws that can be removed. I have used it on things that I was worried about removing too. I got mine at a local auto parts store. It was in-stock and worked great.

This is the first I've ever heard of purple Loctite. Which parts store did you get yours from?
