I have a 2011 C6 Callaway. How can I find out if i have a dry sump?
I have had my car serviced by Chevrolet Dealerships for oil changes and up until recently they changed the oil , using 7 quarts
The latest oil change, I used a different dealership and they used 10 quarts of oil. When I questioned this they said it was because my car is equipped with a dry sump?
How do I know if this is correct?
If so, could i have damage as a result of the prior incorrect oil amounts from previous oil changes?
Thanks for your assistance.
If you have a 2011 Grand Sport with a manual transmission then you have a dry sump LS3 engine....The LS7 uses 10.5 quarts & I believe that the LS3 dry sump is the same
The dry sump oil tank is located under the hood on the passenger side near the fire wall. It also takes the place of where the battery goes on the wet sump motors. So, is your battery located in the rear cubby? Also, I thought the dry sump system held 10.5 quarts full. Someone with a dry sump will chime in.
Enough with the words...if the car is within your possession you need to attach a PIC of the passenger side of the engine bay. a top down perspective for the camera would be ideal. Only then will you the get the assistance you seek.

Reason: clarification.
C6 GS dry sump gets 10.5 qts. Always check the oil level after an oil change even if performed by a dealer. I recently took my car to the dealer for a coolant flush and had them change the oil. Checked it when I got home, and of course they overfilled the oil by 1/2 a quart.
Make sure you bring the corvette to a dealer so they can drain all 10qts of transmission fluid and then add 7 quarts of engine oil to the 10 quart capacity engine making for a total of 17 quarts.
In the engine bay on the passenger side against the fender there is and oil fill and dipstick. If the tank is silver ....it takes 8.5 quarts.....if its black it takes 10.5 quarts . If its automatic it dpesnt have a dry sump.
Where do you check your oil? Wet sump is like all normal engines, the dipstick tube plugs into the engine block and extends down into the oil pan. Dry sump the dipstick goes into the external reservoir tank on the passenger side not too far out in front of the firewall and the stick is very short compared to normal.
* For GS Manual Coupes only. As already stated, if the car is an automatic (as the OP said) he has a wet sump system and it’s 6 qts.
I’d also recommend reading the owner’s manual for the correct information, because as you can see from this thread alone it’s a crapshoot getting the right info on something so simple
What does the wet or dry sump do? We learn something new everyday! Do tell!
The way I understand it is that dry sump is more beneficial for track purposes. A few different benefits, but the main one being that it reduces oil starvation under high g-loads.
