Want to ad a back up camera on my '05 Z51 M6. Afraid of going Blue Tooth (wireless) due to possible "ghost" issues with other electronics within the car. Is this a concern? Any recommendations as to a quality BU camera system?? Thanks!!
Watching this thread as I’m looking to upgrade my stereo and will probably put in the backup cam. Watching some of the install videos on YouTube and the camera install seems pretty straightforward though.
Did you upgrade your head unit? If not, you need to do it. Its pretty much straight forward. Go to Crutchfield.com and look at their HU. You can get a back up camera on Amazon for a lot less then Crutchfield. After you install it, you'll say "why didn't I do this sooner!" No problems with ghost or electrical problems.
Do a search, there’s a ton of threads on cameras. If you’re doing a rear camera, might as well do front while you’re at it. Also no reason to spend more than $30 on a camera from Amazon
Just get a small bullet style camera from amazon and wire it up. Head unit just requires the video cable hookup and then you tap into your reverse lights for power and ground on the camera itself.

I just upgraded my head unit and installed a backup camera at the same time. Ordered everything from Crutchfield including their pre-made wiring harness. It was literally plug and play, the simplest car stereo install I've ever done. I extra wire to splice for power to the backup camera. Installing the backup camera was easy, remove one taillight and drill one hole, then fish the wire up to the front. Whole thing took me maybe 2 hours, and there are plenty of videos on Youtube to help you through it if you haven't done it before. I did a head unit with wireless Carplay/AndroidAuto, but there are lots of options available. Besides my seats (Caravaggios), the head unit and backup camera are some of the best upgrades I've made to my ZR1. Not so much for the sound (although the 13 band EQ offers a lot better tuning than the stock headunit), but for the convenience of having the phone display on the headunit for Google Maps/Waze as well as full audio control. And sure, I could back up with mirrors, but having the backup camera makes it way easier.
I keep hearing about up grading the head unit and I'm a little bewildered. Are you talking about the radio? If so I'm not sure I want to do that as this car has the factory Premium Bose System and I don't think I want to pull it out. Or, is the head unit simply the display and nothing to do with the radio?? New to this game so any help appreciated !!
I dont get it. Do you use your mirrors?
That is what they are there for.
Look at your surroundings when about to park and dont get to close.
Just my $0.02
I must be missing something. My car does not have a mirror on the hood or one by the brake light. The front camera helps me not to run into the curb. Same thing for the rear when I’m backing into a spot.
I will take your suggestion about using my mirrors though.
Thanks.

When your OEM front splitter is over $2,000 the front camera is pretty much a necessity. And as Javaman pointed out there is no mirror dead center in the rear so while your side mirrors can provide some sense of where things are on the sides of the vehicle, they can’t let you know how close your tail pipes are to an obstruction.

The "head unit" is the center screen/control unit. Replacing it doesn't actually replace any of the Bose speakers or amps. Most people will tell you that Bose in the Corvettes isn't that good, and I'd agree it's not much compared to some factory audio systems available in other brands. Having said that, I've been pretty happy with the setup in both my previous '13 GS and my current '12 ZR1. Honestly, I think the sound is slightly "fuller" than the '15 Corvette I had in between. So as I mentioned before, I didn't change the head unit for improvements in sound quality, but for other benefits. The sound is better though as I have way more tuning capability on my JVC head unit with 13 band EQ vs the 2 band EQ on the factory head unit, and significant options to set for speaker size, placement, soundstage orientation, etc.

Exactly. I've setup up my guide lines on my setup so I know exactly where to stop when backing in so as not to whack the tail pipes. I didn't add a front camera, but I probably will as it would be very helpful when pulling in with the carbon fiber splitter.

I believe no cars come with mirrors on the hood or brake light.
It's called "scanning your mirrors" while driving every 5 to 10 seconds.
Most people today dont do that.
I had a guy in a 7-11 parking lot backing out and an angle as he came close to me. I yelled at him and he pointed at his screen and I said "you never saw me in your camera".
His look gave it away as he never saw me near the side of his car.

Yes you still need to use your mirrors even with a backup camera, but with mirrors you still have blind spots, the camera greatly helps to reduce these. Obviously you don't have one, if you did, you'd never want another vehicle without one.

You’re absolutely correct. No cars come with mirrors on the hood or brake light. That’s my point. “Scanning your mirrors” does you no good when pulling up or backing into a concrete divider.
I think the point here is realizing the value of a camera when parking.

With replacing the head unit, you'll still have the Bose system amp in place. The stock head unit sound is terrible, and is dated. An aftermarket head unit sounds so much better plus has features that are so much more up to date such as wireless Apple/Android Car Play, Bluetooth, multiple camera inputs etc. Most of us that have replaced ours consider it to be one of the best mods you can do to these cars. I f you decide yo go that route, there're a lot of friendly people who are more than willing to help you out on this forum if you have any questions. Here's a little writeup from the How To section of this forum, to give you an idea of what alls involved, it's pretty easy to do. https://www.corvetteforum.com/how-to...igation-368176

Obviously there's no convincing him, we who have the cameras consider it to be a must do because of the benefits of them, if Topduarte ever drove a vehicle with a back up camera, he'd see what we mean.
