Sorry to hear about your bad experience. How did you pay for the top? Did you buy it on this forum, or somewhere else? As Ed mentioned, Paypal is always the best method of payment, but not if the seller ask you to send the money as family or friends, because that removes the buyer protection. If I buy an item on here or anywhere else, and the seller asks for payment as family or friends, I walk. If they are too cheap to keep the buyer protected for 3%, they don't deserve my business. Buyer beware with paypal as well.

Paypal is very convenient for both buyer and seller. I mostly agree to pay using friends and family but sometimes if the seller is questionable or has limited feedback I will just add the 3% to my payment just to give myself piece of mind and some protection from a scam or crappy seller that does not ship product or product is not as described.

I throw the friends and family offer out there each time. Either they can send friend and family or they pay the fee if they want the reassurance that I am who I say I am. Generally the buyer should pay the fee imo.
I don't send friends and family . If you didn't include it in your pricing, that's your own dumb fault. There's enough people selling stuff that you don't have to waste time with people who want to tack on that extra fee.
Now if you negotiate a price down, I think it's fair to say "I'll do 273 regular, 260 friends and fam", but sellers that see it as a surcharge for the buyer, that's a turn off for me.

I've been selling parts on this forum for years now, and have never asked anyone to pay the fee or suggested they send friends and family. I've eaten the fee on every transaction the buyer went that route on, and see it as a cost of doing business. I have had people pay me using friends and family, which I appreciated, but I never expect it or ask for it. Over time I've built up a pretty good level of trust with most buyers. When I price something to sell I price it at it's actual value, and never tack on any extra to cover the fee. I just leave it up to the buyer as to which route they want to take.

Which is why you should pass the cost of the fee onto the buyer I probably wouldn't have any issues sending F&F to you since you are very active on the forums and the likelyhood of you scamming are slim to none. That being said if someone doesn't trust that pass the fee onto them. You've earned the trust IMO. But if you don't mind then that's fine too.

I disagree. The PayPal fee is the seller's cost of doing business. Without it there is no record of the financial transaction. When you send money to a stranger, it's not Friends and Family unless you know them. I have bought and sold on eBay for over 20 years. PayPal is the method of payment. It protects not just the buyer but the seller as well. From the seller's point, it shows the item was received through tracking. The buyer can't claim the item wasn't delivered. As a seller, I dislike PayPal fees but it adds a professional approach to a business transaction. Friends and Family payments do not.

PayPal can still be funded with a credit card. Scammer disputes charge, you lose your money. Terrible option for sellers, great for scammers.

Sorry, but it's not that easy. Even a CC company has to contact the other party and get their side of things along with any evidence they might have to prove the service or good was provided. It would be inconvenient in the short term for the seller, but in the long run a scam that simple won't work as long as you have proof of delivery.
