Is the GM dealership the best place or the only place to get a front end alignment? Are there any other places that can be trusted to get that done right?
I'd go to any place OTHER than a dealership. I had my last alignment done by a local shop.
As a general rule you should never take your car to a dealership unless you're having warranty work done.
...totally. Most if not all dealership service departments operate on a "piece work" basis....push thru as many jobs as possible & don't worry about the quality of the work. Contact a local Corvette club & ask for recommendation for a Corvette specialty shop for an alignment. Then I suggest using one of the attached Pfadt setting depending upon your driving style.
The Pfadt specs seem to be the chosen spec for many here on the Forum. The dealer and many independent shops will not align to any specs other than factory because of liability issues. Check with the shop prior to taking the car in if they will use the Pfadt specs.
Here are the list of dealer priorities:
1. Sell new cars
2. Sell used cars
3. Service new cars
4. Perform warranty work on new cars
5. Perform extended warranty work on qualified vehicles
6. Perform major component repairs on GM vehicles
7. Perform general maintenance on GM vehicles
In addition, the people working on your car do not know any more than any qualified mechanic who is familiar with Corvettes. And...when you drop your car off at a dealer, you will get a phone call about a list of things that need to be done to your car, in addition to what you requested.
