Same here. I though it was going to eat the Z06.

A few slight mods, and GAME OVER!

As few Vipers you see on the streets, there are few Z06's on the streets.

I'm in for a Z06 next year.

I am doing a movie, they steal 2 Vettes. 1 is a sup'ed up C5, the other a regular.
Oh, and a C2 that race with the supp'ed C5.

Well, they steal alot more, but the cool thing is, they take a red marker and slowly cross off, Chevrolet Corvette.

(sad thing is I couldn't spell Chevrolet, and the Vette is 16 months old. )

Anyway, Viper. Naw, Z06.

Dissapointed in the Viper. Expected more than that. The 1 sec. at VIR is impressive, the rest is not, but then again the vette doesnt leave a lot of room for improvement.

Much quicker? muahah..

The Viper is hardly any faster at all in a straight line, HARDLY AT ALL. Put a 3.33 gear in the Viper and an intake and a tune on the Z06 and guess what?? My money is on the Z06.

These cars are so close in a straight line that coming here to brag is just such a moot point.

What surprises me the most is that the new owners of Chrysler would actually make the car, since the car was always a money loser for Chrysler in the past with such a small volume.

It was a feel good car for the "auto" guys at Chrysler. I thought the new guys were just about making money with no car tradition. the Corvette is a money maker at GM.

To the guy who ordered one, if you get it, hang on to it, because it is likely to go the way of the Imperial and Plymouth.

Two quick points

1. Z06 in the test was an 07 - w/o the new steering and tranny

2. 08 Viper has NON RUNFLAT Tires

Anyone else think that an 08 Z06 with some PS2's might beat the Viper? times?

I think it would narrow the gap at least.

I think it is a little to soon to be stressing over this. The Viper should be faster with 100 more hp..I didn't expect anything less. What I'm amazed at is that people can't just accept it and move on.....stock vs stock the Viper should win..I knew this would happen when I bought my 07 Z06.

It's real simple with cars and performance. The guy with the most money wins 90% of the time so.......let the modding begin

car and driver tested a 2008 c6 coupe and said they 5-10 mph faster in corners, let's see a 2008 to 2008 test.

If I recall, the whole point of the 08 Viper update was to out perform the Z06. So why would anyone here be surprised that they achieved their goal? Next comes the Blue Devil and that will ****** the trophy back. BFD.

Enjoy your car.

VETTEMANN -

CONGRATS!!!!

The 08 Viper is simply an awesome car, no doubt about that.

I also feel the 11.6@126 is an average time, once some real drivers get in there you will see low 11s@127-130 on stock tires.

However, this will be a SCARY ride.

My stock (with Roe filters) 2001 Viper GTS on stock tires ran:
1.89 60'
8.03@92.92
12.31@117.48

and

1.99 60'
8.10@94.10
12.35@118.52

It would have went faster, but keeping it off the wall after the 1-2 shift caused me to lift both times and that was only 450hp.
On the street it was a safety issue so I put on stickier rubber at the urging of my wife.

Just by putting Kumho R compounds on it it ran

1.68 60' (3500rpm launch)
7.51@92.42
11.67@120.03

and

1.84 60' (2000rpm launch)
7.67@94.21
11.81@120.56

Now, I imagine even though the new Viper is heavier than the old one by about 100lbs, with 150 hp more it should easily trap 127-130 and like I said, run low 11s on stock tires.
I am sure it will be SCARY FAST.
It is a car truly in need of TC and AH to keep most drivers from totalling their new beasts if they choose not to respect it.

BE CAREFUL and ENJOY it!

I just got my Z06 8/2/07, at least I was king of the hill for a few weeks

The car has 95 more hp!!!! This should not even be a race.... I thought the Viper would run low 11's at around 130 in the mags tests. But if these numbers are right, I feel great that I will hold my own with my STOCK Z.

C5 Frank -

The Viper will be faster, but I still think the better driver will win every time.
With this much power it comes down to not making mistakes.

I enjoyed reading that test. I've always said the Viper is an awesome looking machine.....but in its current incarnation, looks are about the only thing I like about it, as everytime I'm in one, I know I would never own one. Hat's off to Dodge for holding the line on the price though, I'm sure those that can overlook athe Viper's many faults will be well pleased.

C'mon Man, put your chubby away. 1 sec at a > 4 mi road course is significant, but hardly insurmountable. Further, even if it's the same driver, different track conditions can easily account for such differences.

As I said before, magazine racing is very difficult to transfer into day-to-day use.

Might be a nice car from some points of view, but not for me. Too much coxmobile.

But if that works for you, fine

On a 4 mi track the differences would be very significant. I went from GY-RF's to PS2's on my Z and picked up 3 sec on a track half that long. But 'ya just don't know until you do it. That's why they bother to have races.

Both are great cars and I'm glad us americans have something to shove in those foreign exotic elite faces thinking they can outrun anything.

0.1 tenth of a second and 1mph faster is a drivers race for sure. and to the 198mph several Z06s have left the show room floow and done over 200mph...202, 203, etc.

I think the 1 second faster around VIR is probably due to the better tires on the Viper. We know how fast the GT3 is around a track with its r-compound tires..damn near quick as a Z and with less power.

Who cares! Enjoy your American built car! If it wasn't for the Viper, I doubt the Corvette would be as good as it is today. The Z06 may not even be here if not for the competition from the Dodge Viper. When you come on a Corvette forum and announce you are buying a Viper and that it is faster you will bring out all the nasty comments from the peanut gallery! Not me! Enjoy your new toy and I'll still wave at ya! The Viper was the best thing to happen to the Corvette.
