[Z06] transmission oil type Z06 ?? DEXRONIII OR THIS P# 88861800

transmission oil type Z06 ?? DEXRONIII OR THIS P# 88861800
Am little confused of what is the transmission oil type to be used on the Z06..!!
the transmission have a tag says DEXRON 3.... but the owners manual dont mention that and mention this part # 88861800??
The part number is a GM Part Number for Dexron III.
I found this on the web for what it is worth:
Per GM service news
This information applies to 2007 and prior GM passenger cars and trucks.
Dexron III is being phased out as a product name. It is being renamed Manual Transmission Fluid and carries p/n 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada).
If fluid p/n 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada) is not yet available when servicing a manual transmission or transfer case, Dexron III can be used in its place.
DO NOT use Dexron VI in place of manual transmission fluid in any manual transmissions or transfer cases that specify Dexron III, as a failure may result.
Dexron III ceased to exist as a licensed by GM transmission fluid in December 2006 and has been superceded by Dexron VI. Any transmission fluid labeled Dexron III is not monitored by GM so you're on your own as far as the formula meeting the original specs from GM. As noted above and in several tech bulletin, do not use Dexron VI in place of Dexron III unless specifically told to. At this point, p/n 88861800 is the only approved fluid for your transmission.
I use Moble1 syn ATF fluid which meets the old Dex III specs. Don't just grab any Mobil1 ATF fluid off the shelf as they also make one that meets the Dex VI spec.

I originally tried the RP stuff and it made the problem worse. Drained and filled with the Mobil1 and it seemed to help some when cold, but did not cure the nibbles. I still granny shift most of the time.
This newly re-released/repackaged GM version of Dexron III (#88861800) for manual transmissions, can it be equally applied to automatics, i.e. 2005 (A4) and prior, that formerly specified Dexron III before Dexron VI superseded it?
Some who’ve applied GM's recommended Dexron VI to their "automatics" have cited slippage problems, which may explain why GM is reenlisting the Dexron III again, at least for the manual transmissions, just uncertain whether it’s the same for both transmission types. One would think it so, but then there may be additives to discourage its application to automatics. tia

Even though GM says VI can be used in place of III in their older automatic transmission, if it were me, I would still run III in a GM auto that originally spec'd III.

Nothing wrong with using Mobil III.
Thanks for the feedback, and you’re right, nothing wrong with the Mobil III; satisfies the Dexron III spec "H" requirement. I simply want to avoid those that claim to be Dexron III but are either partially or fully synthetic, and thought of this repackaged version – IF spec'd to GM's original Dexron III as intended for automatic transmissions – as another viable choice.
Factoid: Dexron III is non-synthetic, whereas Dexron VI is a synthetic. There are five original license holders, and four re-blenders who are using the original “recipe” to produce Dexron-VI at their plants. “All the ‘re-branders’ are buying from one of those nine.
GM originally developed the trademarked fluid in conjunction with Afton Chemical Corp. and Petro-Canada Lubricants who produces the GM branded ATF.
Information from the Flager County Corvette Clubs Jan 2008 newsletter written by Vic Natiello: "DEXRON is a specification not a brand name manufacturer." "GM let the Dexron license expire in 2006," "Dexron III spec H was used before GM gave up its license. Since GM no longer controls the current DEXRON spec, I cannot say that DEXRON III produced nowadays is totally compatible with previous GM recommended product".
This, to me, now seems to start making some sense. It appears Dexron II, Dexron III and GM Part #88861800 can be used. Do not use Dexron IV or Dexron VI. Gear oils, or synthetics? Someone else do the research on them. I'm going to use GM Part #88861800 when I replace my transmission fluid.
I just did a transmission fluid swap in my car and used the factory 88861800 fluid. Does anyone know if the 88861800 fluid is the same exact thing as typical DEX III fluid you buy at any auto part store? I'm talking typical havoline, valvoline, penzoil ATF that specifies as DEX III compatible?

DEXRON-III no longer 'exists' in terms of licensing so there's no control over the formulations, it seems that if you purchase 'DEXRON-III' fluid from an auto parts shelf there's really no precise measure with which to determine whether it's an exact formulation to the original GM specification.
I've used Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in quite a few C5's and 6's and have yet to see any negative issues. The Mobil 1 handles the heat and the cold much better than dex III. I still recommend changing it every 10k miles minimum. More often if you do track days.
..... DO NOT use Dexron VI in place of manual transmission fluid in any manual transmissions or transfer cases that specify Dexron III, as a failure may result.
Bill
What ever you do, make sure it isn't labeled for Dexron VI applications. Viscosity is too thin. Almost anything else will work but not Dex 6.
Sorry to bump this. but what do you guys use for the 2009 C6 Z06 TR6060? I am putting one in my 2007 Z06 and was wondering what oil I should use and when searching I came up with this thread. because above it says for anything prior to 2007. this tranny I got is off a 2009 Z06.
and best place to buy those?? just go to the dealership?? or autozone...etc?? part number would be great so that I dont have to guess. I will look into it more.

I used the newly re-released/repackaged GM version of Dexron III (#88861800) in my 09 TR6060. I put it in at ~15K and am at 21K miles and the tranny is fine. It still has the "cold nibble" but that usually goes away in 1-2 miles as soon as the fluid gets circulated in the tranny.
Also, there is a sticky "how to change Tranny fluid" on this forum that is helpful.

Thanks. I saw the thread about changing the fluids. doesnt look bad at all. only thing is that I will be swapping my tranny at the shop so they will be putting the fluids for me. I just wanted to make sure they use the right oil.
my builder uses roy.p.syncromax and their tech line confirmed this mine only had 7000mi.but i changed it and for the diff. used max gear 75/90 with7 oz.tube of trans-x posi-trac for gm#1052358.and i am using hps 5w30 instead of reg.royal purple they are claiming extra zinc & phosphorus 6$ more for 12 qts.
