Really depends on your power level. IMO you can cheap out on rods. They rarely fail. Put the money in the pistons as they are the most commonly failed part. Wiseco. And if you're staying under a grand you don't need a fancy crank either (again, IMO), but cheap ones flex under big power.
For that power, do it right the first time. It is cheaper in the long run.

I'm going thru this right now myself. Spent $10k on a motor, used Compstar stuff, 8k miles later, rebuilding the motor again because the Compstar crank flexed and took out #4 main.. $7k to rebuild/upgrade to Dragonslayer crank/Ultra H Beams.
Spend more upfront and save you a ton down the road.
My builder is going with compstars and manley pistons..
You need to make those decisions with your builder. When I built my 402 I was thinking about 700 rwhp max, and the builder was going to use a compstar crank and rods. After a little thought, reality set in and I realize I would want more power so I upgraded at that time. Sure enough, now at 1000 I doubt the compstars would have worked out.
I always prefer to over build a little, rather than under build.
I will talk to my builder about that. I don't know. This is my first build like this but not his. I think 850 is the max it will make with the ecs 1500 kit so will the callies hold 850

Perfect example. The upgrade to dragonslayer, ultra billets, and heavy wall wrist pins was 1150.00 at the time of build. In hindsight........great value.

I was at 850 rwhp for 8k miles, 15 passes and quite a few highway hits... Lost oil pressure, yanked motor, #4 main bearing was smoked. That's where the crank flexes, right in the middle.
Penny up the extra $600-700 now for the dragonslayer, it will save you thousands down the road man....Just sayin...
