Methanol is a great racing fuel. But lets get one thing clear, it will not save a piston from thermal expansion.
That job goes to water. most people inject 50/50 meth water and call it 'meth injection' and leave out the fact there is water in there.
The water is the important part.
That said, alot of these 600 700hp setups can get by without either meth or water. 93 is pretty good in modern engines when the tune is reasonable.
Its just long duration racing (say, several back to back pulls from 100 to 180mph or something) that can overheat a piston/cylinder and that is where the water saves the engine
