New to this forum. Just picked up my C6, and I like many of the improvements over my C5. What I dont like is the need to have the car in reverse when shutting down. Anyone know of a way to bypass this??
No way to bypass (yet). You don't HAVE to have the car in reverse when shutting of the motor, but you DO have to put it IN reverse to get the electrical systems to do a shutdown. The car will remind you in the DIC, and also by not executing your exit settings in seat memory (not unlocking the door automatically, not moving your seat to the "saved" exit position).
It's a PITA and you don't want to FORGET - or you'll have a case of the dreaded DBS (Dead Battery Syndrome).
I consider it a minor inconvenience, and find that vendors who have worked on the car (including the body shop at my dealer) need to be made aware of it, or it just gets right by them...
No kidding - PITA! I realized last night that I could shut down and not be in reverse. Thankfully I had to get something out of the car later that evening and noticed the car was still "electrified" until I put it into reverse. Hopefully someone smarter than myself will figure something out soon!
Actually, I have ours to beep the horn three times if I forget to put it in reverse through the driver preference settings. Fortunatley after 3800 miles, it is just instinct now. I don't even think about it.
Historically, I have always left my cars in gear with a manual in case the emergency brake failed anyway, so simply putting it in reverse is no big deal.
Yes I agree with keeping it in gear. Just that reverse is not my choice.....I would prefer to have the option. Its just one of my quirks I guess! I just got the car, so I'll learn to live with it.....for now.
With the keyless system they needed a way to tell the car that you're shutting it down fully and lock the steering column. Meaning that if the car is shut down while on the highway (like in case of an emergency), they can't lock the steering column because you still need to maneuver. Since you won't have it in reverse when travelling on the highway (at least if your sane you won't , that's the way they determine that you want to fully shut off the car.
BTW, after the car is fully shut down you can put the gear lever into any gear you want. When washing my car I put the stick into neutral to avoid any kind of accident .
I ran a thread on this a few weeks back. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...1&forum_id=101
Nothing concrete on how this may be accomplished yet. I hope it can be done in the future, but I don't see a Vette going in the garage for a couple model years now

Well, at least this explaination makes some sense. I did put the car in neutral after the shut down last nite, and there was no problem this morning as stated.

And after years and years, I finally learned to put my auto in park when I shut her down.
I don't get the big deal? You have to park it in some gear......it is basically idiot proof.....it tells you to shift to reverse AND honks at you if you don't....... how can you forget?
Is it a hassle to have to put an automatic in park, or have to step on the brake before shifting in to drive? I just think everybody overreacts to this.......If you are pulling in a garage, then you would have to put it into reverse to back out the next time you got in, so look at it this way, it saved you a step in advance. I have owned several manuals, and it is not that big of deal. Quit complaining, the car is awesome!

The complaints are about the time you might forget, and drain your battery. If it was just an issue about having the car in gear to prevent "rollaways" that would be one thing - linking it to electrical system shutdown was a real bone-head move on GM's part. At least they could have set it to shut down anyway after a specified time-out.
The other problem is having to give the valet parkers a freakin' lecture about the car. Put it in reverse, push this button to get out, don't leave the keys in the car, push button start, etc. I don't like to valet, but sometimes I have to. The other day, some poor guy couldn't figure out how to get out of the car.

Putting the tranny in gear when shutting off the engine is something you should be doing anyway. Corvette, Mustang, Yugo, whatever. If GM had opted for 1st gear instead of R, then the R advocates would complain. They had a 50-50 chance of which gear people would prefer.
I will admit, it is a PITA when you have to hope that when you drop the car someplace, they will remember your warning and that the Post-it note you stuck on the dash didn't fall to the floor.
No, that is another crap answer. Some people enjoy being able to have somebody park the car and not have to worry about all this little hastle crap. GM just isn't thinking and it plays out in more than just the engineering of this car. Valet parking is easy with most cars, but GM has to make it a PITA for Vette owners. The couple two cars ahead of me the other day didn't mind having their brand new MB AMG55 SL valet parked, but a Vette owner would be there for 2 minutes just trying to describe how to shut the car down Shame on GM

Can I complain if dealer of if someone working on my car forgets to put it in reverse and drains the battery? Can I complain if my wife forgets and drains the battery? Can I complain if I have a run-down battery after it has to be jumped started ten times and have to replace it?
This was the one problem I had with the car before I ordered it... other than that I agree it is an awsome car, but in all the years I've owned sticks I always put it into first when I parked, reverse isn't always the easiest gear to get into when you are parked. The problem isn't that people are looking to complain, it's just that this is a requirement unique to this car and it is NOT intuitive.
If someone comes out with a workaround around this stupid requirement I'll pay good $$ for it.
All of us have valid reasons for not liking this feature. And by expressing these concerns it what makes our cars better with each year and generation. Hopefully GM is listening. Just because its an overall awesome car doesnt mean we have to lay down and been quiet.
