Default Cats removal

For those who have removed their cats, did you get the Check Engine light on? A guy I know brought down his down pipe (the piece of exhaust piping just under the exhaust manifold which houses the cats), removed the cats inner ceramic and reinstalled the pipe again. He says that he has been driving the car for over 500 miles without a check engine light??

Check engine light comes from the rear 02 sensors being removed. This can be resolved by getting a pair of "02 Simulators", or just have them deleted from the ECU by programming. Your friend is not getting the check light, because by "gutting" his OEM cat, he retained the 02 sensor mounts. Hey may yet get weird results of DIC codes, because the computer is not going to see the (expected) difference between the manifold sensor, and the post cat sensor. He should just get these "programmed out", and replace the 02 with a theaded plug.
