Last year in November I picked up my new C6 Vette. I noticed at that time when I had the steering wheel turned to the extreme, like when coming down my driveway to prevent the front end from scraping, there was a thump noise, almost like I was running over a news paper. I started trying not to turn the wheel to the extreme and soon forgot about it. Well it looks like the "issue" is related to the weather because it came back this winter, actually worse then before. Anyone have the same problem or info on it....I believe it is related to the Z51 front end!
Probably the outside front tire slipping a bit. The car doesn't have enough caster to accomodate the wheelbase and turning circle, so the front tires have to slip a bit at full-lock.
Go out to an empty parking lot when it's good and cold - say around freezing, turn the wheel all the way and drive slowly. You'll probably hear a thumping sound and feel a little surge along with it. You may notice the back end grabbing a little too.
As far as I'm concerned, this is normal - the alternatives would be a wider turning circle or more caster (which would decrease turn-in performance).
