I have a 2006 coupe with the A6 transmission and I like it. I enjoy being able to use "S" mode in normal driving, and in heavy traffic, and doing some paddle work when I'm driving for fun.
Keep in mind, however, that the A6 transmission is in fact an automatic transmission, and while the paddle shifters make it more flexible, its not an automated manual tarnsmission like, for example, BMW's SMG series of transmissions.
I drove a new A6 (06 w/ 860 miles on it) today. If you like automatic, and having some flexibility to shift as well, it is pretty good. Kind of fund shifting up/down with the paddles.
I ordered my vert w/ MN6 because my '02 SS Camaro 6spd is so much fun to drive. I will know soon how much I like it, as I pick up my vert at NCM on 3/2/06 and will be driving it home to Tahoe. Those I talked to before making my choice thought the MN6 was a lot quicker.
I have the A6, and love it simply because I live in a high traffic area.
The A6 lets me conquer traffic-filled roads, yet shift at pleasure on the empty curvy ones.
The paddle shifts are no substitute for an MN6, however I feel that it is a great addition to an automatic transmission. Once you get the hang of the paddles, you may notice that shifting is actually pretty quick.
I love my A6, but definatly would have bought an MN6 if my area was traffic free.
That's just my $.02.
You will enjoy the car no matter what transmission it has!
