I dont have my manual as I am at work but most chev engines the number 1 cyl. is front drivers side. 1-3-5-7 drivers side front to back and 2-4-6-8 pass. side.

The number 1 piston is always the front one on the side where the head is most forward....look carefully and you will see the two heads are indeed offset.

I know the small blocks of old were 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

True. However, new small blocks, Gen III & IV (LS1/6, LS2/7), are 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3

Lots of time, money, and research. It is not uncommon on all out race motors (on older small blocks) to change the firing order from 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 to 1-8-7-3-6-5-4-2. Many refer to this as the '4/7' swap. I know one of the ProStock teams did extensive research and found the '4/7' swap was worth some power. I would bet that it has to do primarily with intake manifold design, pressure waves, and A/F distribution. I believe GM claims the new LSx firing order is 'smoother' particularly at idle. I would bet part of the LSx firing order change is emsissions driven.

Interesting you would mention smooter at idle. With my Predator install, my idle has the feeling like there is a miss. I plugged it in yesterday and confirmed there is no miss so I'm not sure what gives.
