how in the world can they require a 160 therm. before they will tune.
what's next, they gonna require headers ?
When I inquired about a tune the two individuals I contacted informed me that they would change the stock stat to a 160 degree stat in order to gain the most from their tune.
Both stated that the cars "sweet spot" is around 185 degrees and that they would rather not maintain that temp with just the fans. Lets see if Howard is given the same information from his tuner

that makes a i little more sense, part of their tuning process includes switching to a lower temp. therm.
requiring someone to change to a lower temp. therm. in order to make changes to a/f, timing, fuel rates, etc. is just ridiculous.

see if they will tell you why the sweet spot is 185 degrees.
is cooling being used to control preignition ? which uh, um.. the 'tune' should address anyway. (timing and preignition/detonation, not cooling)
if you're preignitiing you are too lean, which can be resolved with more fuel or less timing.

These guys tune for a living so they were not actually going to get into the nittty gritty. Since I was only "shopping" I thought they were more than helpful. I would assume depending upon how rich or lean the car comes from the factory that there is a combination of changes made to the timing & fuel tables.
Remember, you can keep the engine cool either with more gasoline or lower coolant temps...... they must do the latter otherwise they would not change the thermostat. Look at the brighter side you really need to increase the cooling capacity (larger radiator $$$$$) so they cheat with a lower stat & turn the fans on earlier
In any case I am waiting to see how Howard makes out

i know what you mean folks sometimes don't have time to talk shop when money is to be made. understandable.
