I found it fairly easy to do, i put a large pizza box behind the a/c condensor, but i used a hook knife utility blade... that makes sure you have no screw ups at all and its very easy to cut and cut on the line perfectly! i highly recommend using a hook knife.
Other than that i couldnt be happier~

It does really make a sucking sound. I really could do without that noise but it is cool sounding sometimes. Much more pronounced than the vararam on my C5's. Probably because of one inlet instead of two I guess. At first I thought the tuner had turned my fan on full time.

Default Vararam Installed - Question

Got my Vararam installed yesterday. The biggest PIA was removing the OEM shroud. I was told it should be removed from the bottom. Yeah, right. I ended up cutting it in half and took it out thru the top.

Here's my question: I noticed that, once installed, the Vararam sits about an inch higher than the throttle body and the intake air has to be diverted down hill to the TB. Won't the turbulence caused by a misaligned intake hurt performance? I've seen other installatoin pics on this and other sites and the intake sits higher than the TB as well. The car seems to run well and I have no CELs, but I'm concerned that the misalignment will offset any performance gains from the Vararam.
TIA.

we did mine yesterday also. I kinda wonder the same thing as well as how much is it going to rub on my hoodliner. I FUBAR'd the shroud cutting it. I misinterpreted the template on the spacing. I totaly agree that removing the schroud was the biggest biatch of the process. i'm sure we could do the 2nd one alot easier though

Especially if you install the spacer the alignment seems to be off even more, It seem to me that the S.C. needs to be about a 1/4 of inch shorter at the neck were it connects to the TB.

I never noticed that it sat any higher than the stock stuff. If you look at this pick it looks pretty straight on. Maybe the shroud is not cut properly to allow the Vararam to sit properly. I have heard that people were still having to trim their "pre-cut" shrouds, and they seem to be more trouble than they are worth if you are careful about cutting your shroud!

Shocker, that photo is misleading, you need to see a shot from the side, then you'll see how the coupler steps down to the TB.

I talked to a tech at VR (Patrick 713-899-6456) and he insisted that the misaligned coupler had "NO" negative effects on performance. He said the air currents would be just as smooth as if it was straight. I have no idea if it's true but my main concern is getting it to fit properly and seal properly. Thanks for all your continued help with the VR.

i think the stock set up there is a step down to the tb, even with my k&n it has a step down affect too. by looking at the previous picture my step down isn't as big as the vararam.

Default I would like to sell you mine, but that wouldn't be fair

Hey, I would sell you my VaraRam CAI, but I think it would be cheating you. As some other people have mentioned on here, I too have had problems of stuff getting past the air cleaner. The first time I thought I was seeing things. But then I noticed the seal around the seemed ballooned.
A couple of weeks later I checked it again, and this time the latch was undone, and it looked like the case if balooning even more. I think the wind velocity is causing the thing to baloon, and this is causing blow by of particles and things like pine needles, leaves, grass, etc. It needs redesigned in my opinoin.

If you have a vararam and spacer look at the hood liner over the clamp on the air bridge coupler. There will be a little mark where it hits.

I just removed the stock coupler(from between the MAF and the TB) off a 2005 Corvette yesterday and that stock accordian piece is steps way down to the TB anyways. This is just how it sits from the factory.

I am going to do a little work on my vararam before I drive it again. Vararam should probably come up with a shorter coupler and distribute it. Would not cost them much and in my opinion may save them some money in the long run.

Hayseed, in another thread, posted that he made some adjustments to the Vararam that helped with the alignment. Here's what I did using his suggestions:
1. Removed the red mounting bar, drilled two additional holes 1/2" above the originals on the intake and remounted the bar. That created more downward adjustment for the entire intake.
2. Removed the plastic radiator cover and notched it just beneath the intake where it mates to the mass airflow sensor and the throttle body. Two 10mm bolts on each side hold it in place. Picked up about .25" where the maf sensor hit the hood liner. Also rotated the entire mafs assembly about 30 degrees so the plug would not hit the hood liner.
3. Shaved 3/8" off the rubber blocks that are mounted on each side where the two halves meet. This gave the halves a much tighter fit.

I am definitely not taking credit for this. Those were Hayseed's suggestion and they really helped with alignment.
