Default CAGS and Check Engine Light

I recently purchased a CAGS eliminator from Mid America and installed it on my 2005 Z-51. Shortly afterwards, I got a check engine light so I took it to the dealer today. He said the CAGS eliminator was causing the light and said it could void my warranty if I put it on.

Anyone else ever had a problem like this?

thanks in advance,

Mines been on since about 03/05 and haven't had any such warnings. My car is a regular at repair facilities and they have never said anything about the CAGS eliminator. Good luck, you may want another opinion --Ed

You got a CAGS elliminator with a bad resistor. Get another brand and the check engine should go away.

Even better yet, just buy the resistor from radio shack and jam it in the CAGS female connector. 2.2K Ohm resistor.

Look at the 50 cent radio shack resistor mod in this link. Go to Install Documents - Transmission
http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...sity/index.htm

By just putting the resistor in there you don't add any connections, solder joints, wiring ... to fail. Countelss "CAGS eliminator modules" have failed leaving you with your pants down at a dealer. I've done tons of these resistor only mods, not a single one has ever failed.

Your just jamming the resistor directly into the CAGS female connector. Bend resistor into a U shape, Jam it in, tape it up, zip tie it to the side of the trans and forget about it for the life of the car.

There is no reason to have the exact same resistor only with a plastic box and wiring and 20 to 30 bucks more. Follow the F-body crowd way of cheaper and more reliable.

Some dealers will install the unit so I'm sure it does not void the warranty.

I have found ignorance is the main cause of "void the warranty" statements by the dealer, if it didn't come withthe car to begin with and they don't recognize the part of mod it is an automatic response from them. Ask to ssbe shown where that statement is in the warrenty.

Thanks for the great response. The final resolution was to remove the CAGS eliminator and the check engine light went away. They wanted to charge me for the labor but I talked my way out of it. Maybe I have a bad device.

I checked my bill and it shows a P0803 code...seems to have something to do with the "skip shift solenoid." I'm not sure if there's any way to ops check my CAGS eliminator or not. Maybe I'll just install the resistor as recommended above.

Thanks again for the great info!

Default Same exact problem

I had the same problem with my Mid-America cags eliminator after a week or two. I replaced it with one I got from Zip products ( it was very different looking). It has been working flawlessly for 6 months.

Virtually everyone on forum using CAGS skip has no problems. Try another unit.

been using the rs version for the last two years without any problems.

when the dealer replaced my clutch under warantee they didn't say anything about it, nor did they reconnect it. in fact, he actaully tied it back a little better than i did.

edit: here is the rs cag eliminator info.

this is from DocRings1 (the c6 faq master)

"Today I used the Radio Shack resistor MOD...

BUT: I was able to fit it into the original plug AND put the plug back into it's original fitting on the tranny.

0. Buy a five pack of 2.2K Ohm resistors at Radio Shack for $1.00.
Part# 271-1121, the employee can find it for you.
1. Trim each of the leads on the resistor to about 1.5 inches long.
2. Fold them both at 90 degrees to the resistor.
3. Unplug the CAGS plug from the tranny.
4. Insert the resistor into the CAGS plug (there are only two holes).
5. Slip the resistor down until it is flush with the plug.
6. Reseat the CAGS plug into the tranny fitting.
7. The extra space of the resistor will not let the bracket lock, but it will be a tight fit.
8. Secure the plug to the fitting with a zip-tie angled into the "neck" of the fitting to retain the plug. Trim the excess zip tie material flush.

Except for the zip-tie, it looks stock: NO TAPE, NO EXTRA length of CAGS bypass wiring, just a barely noticeable zip-tie. I doubt if even the Chevrolet dealer would notice the mod at all.

I had been reluctant to try this resistor mod due to all the electrical tape and wanting a stock appearance... this solves BOTH dilemmas, and for my $1.00 at Radio Shack, I've got four more resistors!

VERY NICE! And still weatherproof.

It took all of 10 minutes and that included jacking up the car!"

I have CAGS module ordered from Southern Car Pats, and 07 MN6 coming in about two weeks.

Question...I thought the Cags was a "pug and play" type thing like the similar to the Window Valet?

Also thought if you had to go to dealer for service that it could be unpluged if necessary?

Is my thinking off? I have not seen any photos yet?

Thanks!

It is a plug and play! It takes 10 min to install or remove!! It just plugs into a solenoid on the transmission.

My dealer did not install it, but they said they would. Just got car back from 1st gear warranty replacement, still had the CAGS on it.

Has anyone else tried this?

If it didn't work, you apparently did something not quite right. All the resistor does is simulate/emulate the external load (i.e. the CAGS Solenoid) the CAGS circuit sees. A resistor value too small would cause greater than nominal current to be drawn (short or near shorted solenoid) and a resistor value too large would cause less than nominal current (possible open circuit/solenoid coil) triggering DTC P0803 1-4 Upshift (Skip Shift) Solenoid Control Circuit Malfunction to be set and illuminate the CEL.

Make sure you put the resistor in the HARNESS side plug, and not in the transmission receptacle. The resistor won't help you if you stick it in the tranny; it's the PCM that needs to see the electrical resistance, and the only way that can happen is if the resistor is on the harness end.

If you DID place the resistor leads in the harness plug, then the leads somehow didn't make good contact with the terminals inside the plug.
