Default Time for new tires

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Time to replace tires on my '05 roadster. Any opinions on run flat vs conventional. Thinking about BF Goodrich KDW-2 G force. I haven't been too impressed with Goodyear OEM's

I haven't seen a bad report yet on the BFG g-Force KDW's. In fact every report says they are happy they made the switch. I'm replacing my supercars this week after 19,000 miles with them. Went with 255's up front and 295's on the rear. $950 shipped from TireRack for the set. As far as they not being run flats, I'm not worried. Every flat I've ever got in 47 years of driving has been a slow leak due to a nail, screw, etc. Carry a small compressor but with tire pressure monitoring you should be able to get to a gas station air pump before a slow leak stops you. The compressor add a little insurance.

I'm due for a new set of fronts; still have a few miles on the rears. Debating between the KDWs (cheaper) and PS2s (quieter and lighter), but not going with the runflats, mainly due to the noise and cost.

These two tires seem to have the highest overall owner satisfaction, both from the Tire Rack surveys and general impressions. Some forum members have been quite happy with the Falkens, as I recall, but I don't know anything they do that the BFGs don't except look a little less funny.

Love my PS2's (255/305) and the way they feel glued to the road, wet or dry. Noise is down compared to runflats also. Higher price only downside.

I've been leaning towards the BFG KDW2's, not from price but from the performance standpoint. Price is a nice bonus though. BFG KDW2's looks like the way to go. Thanks for the info

I also switched from Goodyears to the KDWs however I suggest you carry a plug kit and a scissor jack for extra insurance. Knowing I was going to non-runflats I had already purchased a compressor, plug kit and scissor jack and had them in the car. I ran over something that punctured the front left so I thought I could inflate the tire which would make it easier to drive to get it repaired. No such luck, the puncture was so large that air would escape as fast as it went in so I used the plug kit and it did the trick! I drove to the dealer and pulled off the runflats and put on the KDWs.

Looks like there's a price increase on the GY EMTs; this may be related to a new and improved version of the tire. Or may not. In any case. right now the Tire Rack is now showing the stock size GYs at $398.00 and $314.00 (on special) vs $252 and $422 for the PS2s. Guessing that the special is to sell off the old ones and the price will be around $500 after that they will be more expensive than the PS2s.

See this thread.
Also this one. Maybe I should be looking at Yokohama Advans - there's a Yokohama plant near where I live. I don't think they make the Advans, though. Mostly truck tires.

I do have KDW-2 (255/40/18 & 295/35/19). They are very sticky, but very noisy, especially 4-WD truck tire sound between 30 and 40 MPH, which is very weird and driving me nut..

I remember only one of forum members experienced the same noise as I mentioned. However most members claim KDW-2 is quiter than stock (BTW, I have non-Z51).

I'm wondering if this kind of noise is just only from mine. Does any other memeber not have this weird tire noise, especially between 30 and 40 MPH? Or doesn't bother you?

I put only 1000miles on KDW-2. Now I'm thinking to purchase Falken FK-452....

I think a lot of the noise issue is what one's used to. The GY Supercar EMTs on the Z51 are pretty noisy, varying from "what did you say" to "did a jet just land beside me?" depending on the pavement. The standard EMTs are a lot quieter. It may be that the KDW-2s are somewhere in between, and sound quiet to someone used to the Supercars but noisy to someone used to the standard tires.

The other thing, of course, is to double-check your alignment - a little bit of error can increase the noise a fair amount, especially with blocky treads.

I have KDW2s and I didn't notice an increase in noise when switching over....

I see your point on Supercar EMTs on the Z51 vs. KDW-2s vs. standard EMTs!!

Thank you

I think I'm going to go with the BFG KDW-2's as well. What about the tire sensors, what happens when we add tires that are not monitered? Or is it monitored?

does anyone remember the thread awhile back about 19" nitto DR's , one of the members posted the thread to measure the interest for the tire and was going to forward it to someone at nitto , who he was talking to. i thought if enough people were interested and nitto decided to make them that it could be out early next year. is there any new news on this

No issue there, the monitors still work fine. The sensors are attached to the wheels and work with any tires. The monitor is required with runflats because otherwise you might not know that one is flat. With non-runflats you just have a nice built-in tire pressure gage.

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's are the best performance tires I have ever owned. Awesome grip in wet or dry, very quiet, and good tread life for a hi perf tire.
