Default OBD 2 Scanner Question

Do these C6 Vettes need the CAN protocol for the code scanners? I want to buy a scanner for DIY work but unsure what type I need.

Yes, must be CAN.

I have the AutoXray EZ-Scan 4000... excellent scanner, works just fine on my `06 C6. If you shop around online you can find one (new) for around $200-ish.

Yes, you will need a CAN protocol unit. Check here.

This is the place I bought mine. The guy that sells them is outstanding to deal with too.

Thanks for the input guys. I was unsure if I needed the CAN protocol but looks like that is what is needed for our babies. I didn't need one before with the C5. It would read the codes through the DIC. I really liked that feature. Wish they hadn't discontinued it on the C6.

CAN stands for "Controller Area Network". Not exactly sure what that means except that you need it to get codes from your C6. How can you tell if your scanner has it?... Will it read codes on the C6? If not, then it does not have the CAN protocol.

My old Actron won't work because it's not CAN compatible. I can send it in and get it upgraded for CAN for $60 plus shipping. I'll just buy one of the Walmart ones when ever I get a code.

I have one also. It will not work on the Vette. Get a Innova 3030 at Walmart for under $70

I use Innova 3110. The display tells the discription of the code. There are a lot of good ones for sale.

I also have the inova 3030 from walmart. I guess it has the CAN because it works. Anyway, for those of you that have the above inova does this scanner ever gives you a green light. When I went with high flow cats the car kept giving me codes then I got O2 sensor extensions that work as sims and these codes resolved. But I continue to get a yellow light on the OBD scanner with a flashing EV, but no codes or check engine light. Awhile ago the DIC told that the gas cap was loose, but it did not give me a check engine light and resolve quickly after I tighten it. It has been more than 500 miles since there have been any codes in my car so why is the EV still flashing. And, do you guys get a green light on your inova scanner?
Thanks!

if i recall correctly a 'flashing' symbol means the 'self-test' of the emmisions system has not yet completed.

some of the 'tests' or 'self-checks' only complete after certain driving scenarios have been performed.

some of them require a certain number of cycles before they complete, although, i would have suspected it should have completed by 500 miles. hhmm...

I have the Innova 3110. It is a good product. I use the PC interface to track my car's tune. If my car throws a code I use the report feature to forward to 21st Century Musclecars. they always respond with bring it in or not serious wait for your next regular visit.

I seldom throw codes but it is nice to get them diagnosed from the Innova reports.

I recently switch to the HPTuner software and will begin data logging in search of the perfect tune

The best tool I've ever used is made by Auto Enginuity. I have been using the enhanced version on Powerstroke, live multiple senor data logging, graphing, scanner, etc.
Not sure if they have the full blown enhanced CAN for the GM's yet.

Innova 3030 from Walmart: $70 (or you can find it on the internet and maybe beat that price if you can get free shipping). Works fine. It IS can-enabled.
