Default Still unresolved Tinting issue

Frustration! I tried asking this before and got a barrage of hocus pocus answers, none of which seemed a solid answer.

HOW DO YOU TINT THE REAR WINDSHIELD OF THE C6 WITH ONE PIECE?

Every job I've seen has the dot matrix blacked out in vinyl and a 2nd piece of film covering the rest of the glass. This reduces visibility through the dot area from low to ZERO, and it looks like garbage.

I've heard people say "use a gluestick and hairdryer" and no tint shop has ever heard of it or will attempt it.
Every tint shop I go to only knows the two piece method I spoke of. When I insist on uniform tint and one piece over the entire rear windshield they offer to take a razor blade to the dots, which might be fine, except you run the risk of a)cutting the rear defroster connections and/or b) making it look like crap with no cancel button.

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU'VE DONE, I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO TINT MY CAR PROPERLY. I CANNOT DRIVE OUTSIDE SAN DIEGO AREA FOR THIS.

ps. Because my car is registered in SC, I can spray paint the windows black if I want to and get away with it. Out of state cars are exempt from tinting regulations!!! limo tint here I come, as soon as I figure out who to take it to!

the problem with using one piece and leaving the dots in place is that the tint won't cling to the dots as well.

You can't. The only way to fake it is to cut the film on the over lap pieces and remove the underlying film. When the glue sets you may see light though. One piece is near impossable.

You might want to read up on that, most CA traffic laws apply to any car operating in the state, regardless of where it is registered. It just depends on how picky the CHP is.

to your question, my rear window is done in one piece, I watched him do it. 20%, don't have an issue with the dot matrix unless you get close.

Yeah, I know the dots cause a clinging problem...I wasn't asking why it is hard, but how it is done, I've seen pics of some good looking jobs.

"the dots don't cause a problem until you get real close"

Yeah? How close? If you can see it at all it's unacceptable. Bubbling, gap-ridden tint jobs just make the car look cheap.

Still frustrated, Still looking for an answer!

Mine looks great!...one piece rear window tint.
In 80% tint.
I watched him junk the first 2 attempts, had to heat (with a propane torch just to apply heat to form using this very carefully)and shape first on the outside than placed inside and pressed and shaped again. He finally got it third attempt.
Great guy...very proud of his trade!
Spoke to him a month later and he told me that another customer came in with another C6 and he tried and tried, but after six or so attempts gave up and two pieced that job!
Very happy that he was able to do mine in one piece.
Fortunately in Canada most provinces allow rear window tint as long as it does not interfere with driver's periphral.

Mine is a single piece and looks great. Dealer had it done. No sanding, no scraping. I followed a previous installer's advice (who did my C5) and heated the tint in the sun and pressed the tint to the dots with my fingers and a towel every chance I got for the first two weeks and presto, no bubbles.

Default Rear window tint

I had mine done at http://www.aterrifictint.com/
He uses one piece and sands the dots. It looks perfect. No white around the dots.

I just had my windows tinted about two weeks ago. They did a 1-piece installation on the back window, however, I have about a 1.5" strip along the center of the top edge (where the dots are most pronounced) where if you look close from the outside, appears a bit lighter than the rest of the tinted glass. The film does not lay perfectly there.

The installer heated, shaped and cut the film to size on the outside of the rear window before applying the film on the inside glass.

As the glass heats-up in the sun each day, I try rubbing the small 'flawed' area down and its slowly helping. I've probably fixed about half the small area. It's not perfect but its not bad enough to have them redo it.

Not sure what part of the country you are in, but my tint guy actually painted the dots. He has done many C6's and actually masks off everything except the dot area and then paints it black and tints right up to the painted area. It looks PERFECT on my car. The guy is more like an artist that a tinter. He does amazing work and I'm completely satisfied. See if you can find some people through your local corvette club that had theirs done and get the name of their tinter. I found my tinter that way. It was nice to talk to other C6 owners that could recommend someone reputable.

If you are near the Atlanta area, call Oasis window tinting in Lawrenceville,GA at (770) 638-9900. Ask for "Sundown". (no kidding) He is the owner.

Fill out your profile so we know where you are...

Good luck!

By the way, that area of the dot matrix is out of your range of vision anyway, so painting it solid does not decrease your visibility out the back.

GEEZ, STILL NO SOLID ANSWER EVERYONE AGREES IS BEST. A CAR THIS EXPENSIVE IS NOT SOMETHING TO GAMBLE WITH, I WILL LET NO ONE TOUCH IT WITH SAND PAPER UNTIL I'M POSITIVE THAT's THE BEST WAY, THE SAME GOES FOR PAINT.

heating with a blowtorch, pressing the bubbles and praying, painting the dots, sanding the dots, no tint guy I talk to has heard of any of these procedures. I'M GOING CRAZY!!!! SOMEONE HELP!

I CAN NOT LEAVE SAN DIEGO FOR THIS TINT JOB! I have heard of Sundown but alas he is in Atlanta.

I understand your frustration, but calm down a little, all is not lost. If you can't find an installer who can do a one-piece installation by calling the ones in your yellow pages, find a chevy dealer in your area that sells a significant number of Vettes and talk to their sales or service manager. They will have an installer they use who knows what to do. The "best" method is one-piece and push it down with your fingers every day for two weeks after the install. I've done two Vettes that way, a C5 and a C6, and they both look great. No sanding, scraping, or painting, or two pieces, needed.

exactly like mine. I left the car outside in the sun and rubbed the dots down with the back of my finger for like a week. Just concentrating on one section at a time in the dotted area. It looks pretty good, no way would go back and ask for a re-do. It's 95% clear after some effort. Probably wouldn't have come out so well if I would have just left it alone (and my installer basically told me that upfront).
I'll try and take a pic and post it. It's hard to tell.

I understand the frustration, but someone does need to calm down a bit. There are no guarantees in life, as with the case with the tinter that did one vette with one piece and tried on another vette for 6 times. If there was an easy and clear answer, the forum would have it already. Obviously, the rear window is PITA, if you look closely, the view out from inside is distorted without any tint already, which means the glass is very very oddly shaped.
