Cool man, but you should search within and ask yourself why you must have an expensive, wasteful hobby to be happy is all I'm sayin'. Nothing against all yous, but I see the same bad habits in my Dad. He has 22 cars, 5 of which are vettes. He hardly ever drives most of them, and he'll buy cars at whim on ebay and such. When you compare that gluttonous behavior to the other 97% of the worlds people, it's kinda gross right? My mom is just the opposite, only takes what she needs, shes a good person.

by the way if your interested, his cars.

-53 corvette convertible, red on black with red stitching. 04 z06 engine, power steering, the works. Featured in sports car market quarterly.

-67 Stingray coupe, white on blue with 4spd hurst and 450hp crate motor. Bought out of Oregon.

-83 Mako Shark c3 coupe red on red. 454.

-06 Z06, silver on black/red.

Other cars, 03 cobra 427 roadster shelby certified. (they made 1000 in 2003, exactly like the 65's part for part) 05 Ford GT, 03 360 F1 Modena, 02 575 Maranello, 76' Daytona Spyder, 06 V8 Vantage, 03 Z8, 02 M Roadster, 04 sl55, One of those classic Jag E-type convertibles from back in the day, 03 Morgan Roadster, 02 545 Wagon M Sport. I think that's all? Hard to remember em all.

Pretty much all he drives day to day is the sl55 and Z06.

You make alot of good points I must say. Many people buy things for different reasons but buying things just for the hell of it is wasteful especially if you don't appreciate it or take care of it.

I like mods. I got this stuff before the dealer tags expired, but I may not finish the install until Monday or Tuesday. This is an engineering experiment for me, including the HPTuner tune by me.

Some itches you cant scratch. Others you can but shouldnt. The rest... might as well have a swipe at em. You wanna mod? Mod. You wont be on your deathbed thinking about the bathroom you could have remodeled instead. You might however be thinking about some of those thrill rides you took.

Yup.

And to the comment of "wasted money" - take a class in economics. If people don't spend, people don't have jobs.

Cool lets all spend and consume in excess so more people can have jobs. Screw what's morally right, beyond the employment needs of our (dare say greedy) 3% of the worlds population and this current generation who cares right?

Look Im no saint, I just trashed the oem signal bulbs to replace them, even though they were still working fine, just because I wanted a different look, so even I can be wasteful and american.
It's when you start doing stuff to the car that will definitely shorten its life span by ALOT. like say, making the engine work twice as hard as it was designed to for a finite # of slightly more thrilling accelerations.

Joe, make sure and read the instructions for the B&M carefully. Rotate the shift lever shaft before you install it on the car. If you don't and one of the little flat washers drops into the tunnel ............... UH-OH Been there done that !

4 My Ego--I got the shifter in. I remembered to rotate the top part 180 ok, but dropped a 1/4" drive extension with 3/8" socket into the tunnel and couldn't retrieve it with a magnet. I will have to take the tunnel cover off when I do the exhaust. I am just as clumsy with the Corvette as I am with the Fords, but there are a lot more places to loose stuff in this Corvette than there are in a Mustang.

I think mods are worth it. Some people ask why not just get the Z06 its already there!!! Well if I got the Z06 I would not be happy letting some other stock Z06 keep up with me so I would be doing mods to it also.

I got around 6K off window sticker so I figure the dlr paid for most of my mods. I am happy now and think I have modded my current one to where I want it and I think I have more RWHP than a stock Z06 for around 25K less and with my gears will kick most of there azz's.

God made dinosaurs so mankind could flog their overpowered V8s.

Or I can lie and say that I really want to make the world a better place by burning up all the oil so that mankind will be forced to come up with a more environmentally friendly means of transportation.

Take your pick.

Wow nico, you are jaded. You do make some good points, and I can understand where you're coming from. Buying something just for the sake of buying it, or being able to say you have it are often seen as insecurity issues. The real crime in buying anything is not enjoying it. That should be the sole reason for modding. For me, I don't want just what Chevy, or GM, or whoever decides is good enough for me. Only I can decide what I really want. They supply the canvas, I supply the paint, and when it's all said and done. I created a masterpiece that I wanted.

As far as resale. Yes a modded vehicle will usually attract less buyers than a stock one. But only a poor investor will purchase a car and see it as any type of financial investment. You're going to lose money no matter what. What's important is knowing that you enjoyed the car while you had it. Not saying, Damn I wish I had more fun with it before I sold it.

Let me ask you something. These uber-***** that you date. Do you have sex with them? Or are you more concerned with the guy that's eventually going to marry them? Do you tell her that, "No I'm not going to have sex with you because when the next guy wants you I don't want you to be worn out for him." I'm willing to bet that's not your reaction. So what do you do? You enjoy her as much as you can while you have her. I'm not going to draw parallels for you. I'm assuming you're smart enough to figure it out on your own.

Joe L, happens to all of us. Just part of Vette ownership I guess. I know having a shorter throw makes driving the M6 more enjoyable. I'm going to replace the short shift **** with either the tall leather one or, one made from Delrin.

No guy is concerned about the next poor sap coming in for leftovers. It's the women who should choose one guy and stick to him, maintain their own virtue.

And for your condescension, GET BENT HELMET.

Seriously though, your parallels are striking. When I buy a Vette, I know I don't say, "No, I'm not going to mod it or drive the hell out of it, because I don't want it to be worn out/used up when the next guy wants it?

.

I've been reading this thread for a while. There are people who like to mod and others that will always keep their car stock. The stock people will also most likely pamper their car more and not drive it hard.

I fall in the mod category. I also take excellent care of my car, but I do drive it hard at the 1/4 mile track and in Solo 2 autocrosses. It's just a lot of fun.

However, there are people who are on the fence and want to know if modding a car is worth it? I can't help but think of the original Austin Powers movie where Doctor Evil looks at Scott and says:

"SCOTT, YOU JUST DON'T GET IT, DO YA?"
