Default Underhood Insulation

I just read a thread and someone mentioned that they had removed their underhood insulation. Does anyone know of a reason not to remove it?

I was just looking at a Callaway supercharger converison at Selman Chevrolet in Orange, CA and noticed that they replaced the hood to accomadte the supercharger and their hood had no insulation. It may be more focus on cooling and less on sound?

The underhood liner is a nice sound deadener. It will not hurt anything to run without it, but you will find you have more noise from the engine compartment.

Cory,

Could we cut only the insulation away over the air filter to allow more free air space for the filter to pull from? I have also thought about using some high density 3/4" foam tape to hold the filter up off of the back of the shroud allowing more free airflow around the 'whole' air filter not just the top half.

What do you think?

In addition to providing sound deadening, the underhood insulation is an important piece of safety equipment. The grommets that hold it in place have a relatively low melting point, which in the event of an engine fire will give way, allowing the blanket to drop and (hopefully) smother flames, or at least slow their progress. Granted, such an occurence is rare, so you could probably get by without it, but you never know...

I'm not usually one to let aesthetics get in the way of performance. You could indeed cut it and might find an adbvantage there... but it will be small. If you cut, make sure the remaining part is still properly secured.

I just pulled mine off my H2 last week. It wasn't wearing well in the WA wetness. My Kenne Bell is much louder in the truck now

Well, if it will make you feel any better, all 98-2002 Camaro SSs, Firehawks, and I also believe WS6s all came from the factory without any underhood insulation. Had my 01 SS for 4 years, never noticed any additional noise, heat, or had any issues because I didn't have underhood insulation. Don't see why the Corvette would be any different (was kind of surprised they put one on the car - I like the look of the underside without insulation).

I agree here. If it isn't much louder or have any other negative side effects, I do not see why I still have mine on. It's a fuzz collector! Looks cleaner without it. I thought it helped to reduce the heat on the hood... but I would think it also played advocate and trapped some additional heat from escaping.

who has removed theirs?

If I'm not mistaken, the F body hoods mentioned earlier in this thread are 2 or three layers thick in some spots. The vette hood is one. The liner is only about 5 lbs and may protect the paint from engine heat.

Small amendment... 98 Camaro Z28s had the blanket. SS had the SLP "Ram Air" fiber glass hood and did not have the blanket.

There are some pins holding it in just back of the air filter area. I am going to cut mine back to there. This seems the best of both worlds. If my hood melts and caves in I will take pics so you all can laugh...

Nobodys hood with melt, or destroy the paint under or on top of the hood. The underhood liner is only used for two things.

1. Sound deadening.
2. Fire Blanket.

The hoodliner is made to drop on the motor in the event of an engine fire. The plastic pins melt and drop the hood blanket on the engine and snuff out the fire. I used to sell chevys back in the day and thats what they were always used for.

Possible advantages??

1. Louder engine noises. I like that, and love the sound of my LS2 screaming through the RPM range.

Thats it. I was going to remove mine very soon, but I was hoping someone else would do it first so I can see how much paint is under there. On my 04 cobra, the factory decided not to paint under the hoodblanket and it looked bad. If they completely painted the under hood, I would do it in a second.

I just did it. Mine was painted underneath, all be it not so well. If you flip it over and cut from the back you can follow the lines made by the press so you get a smooth flowing edge. Too easy!!! SOTP +/- .00002 rwhp, making it my way, priceless!
