Default Waranty

"what exactly voids the waranty?" seems to be a rhetorical question when i ask the dealer here, so would someone please tell me (officially) what viods the thing, do headers really viod it?? and how can i know for sure?? so i can face the dealer with it......

i'm thinking of CAI , longtubes , catback , MAF, Intake manifold , short shifter
thanks alot

If your service writer or manager says your mod caused the problem your on your own. You can fight it but it can be costly and time consuming and may not be worth it. Generally cat back and CAI are OK. Ask your service writer before you do it and see what he says. They probably will not give you a straight answer.

Default Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

The "Act" gives consumers certain warranty rights regarding products. It basically says that just because you change something doesn't automatically void the entire warranty. The warrantor has to link the failure to your change.

That said, in practice, if the warrantor says that your action caused the failure, it is up to you to prove that it did not. Often a lengthy and costly process. Face it - GM has more resources than most of us.

If you put on long tubes and get a radio failure, there is little likelihood of a warranty issue. If you have a trans failure, the actions get closer and you are in more danger. A Fast intake will likely raise eyebrows on a warranty claim on the motor, a ported OEM would likely go unnoticed....

Bottom line, it cost money to go faster.

My experience is the dealership (GM) will aggressively deny warranty service for anything even remotely related to a modification. I wish it were otherwise but I understand why this is so. GM engineers, builds and warranties their product....once you modify the car and deviate from their design specs, whey should they pay to repair anything related to the modification?

People like to cite the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and say GM has to "prove" the modification caused the problem before they can deny warranty repairs. The reality is GM has bo-koo engineering and legal resources and once they deny a claim it will effectively place the burden on you to disprove GM.

IMO everything on your list, to one degree or another, will cause the loss of portions of your factory warranty (over and above the item itself). If in doubt ask your dealership in advance. If they say a certain modification is OK, ask them to put it in writing. I'll bet they won't.

IMO if you performance modify your car you must be fully prepared to lose vast portions of your warranty.

CAI, catback, and shifter shouldn't be a problem. The rest is pretty much at the discretion of the servicing dealer. You can never be sure.

I don't see where you're located but headers and moving the cats will be a real issue with emissions testing in some states. As for Federal emissions I'm pretty sure you CAN'T even move the cats, they must remain in stock location. That pretty much prevents headers on these cars. I know lots of people do it and lots of inspectors sort of 'look the other way' (not knowing what a stock one really looks like in the first place). But the dealer absolutely knows the difference.
