Default Shroud cutting

What is the best tool to cut the shroud while keeping it in place in the vehicle? I am Installing the Vararam and do not want to remove the shroud to cut. Can a sharp straight edge get the job done? What are you guys using to do this?

I wanted to stay away from a blade that is too long and to reduce the risk of hitting anything behind it.

I used a hook blade in my utility knife, worked great. I also took a scrap piece of carpet and stuck it between the shroud and condesor.

You might want to checkout the Lingenfelter web site as they have some decent DIY instructions posted for installing their CAI...it does involve removing the shroud but it might be helpful. If you can't find it PM me your email address and I can send it to you (it's a .pdf file).

I cut my in place on the car with a utility knife. It is pretty hard to damage the ac condenser if the blade is only out 0.25", but I think most people get in trouble when they try to trim a little more off the opening and the knife slips (I almost did that). So always trim in a manner that the knife will go away from the condenser if it slips.

....and go easy don't use all that brute force only to slip and damage something.

FYI, removing the shroud is easy if you have already done it 2 or 3 times, for a first timer (been there done that!) it's a pretty steep learning curve.

My advice leave it in place but place something up behind it if possible and go easy (that is too say if you mess up, please don't blame me), also I would suggest marking the template with something like a silver ink Sharpie.

Two thoughts, first I removed the plastic radiator cover that has two bolts on either side. This allowed me to pull the shroud forward and get a clear view of the a/c condensor. I'm glad I did this because I could ensure the large tupperware cover I used to protect the condesor was properly placed. The bad news is I thought I perfectlyly placed the template on the shroud, however my cut was too high. I am very disappointed and there is a huge gap at the top. My template was not correct as I lined the bottom of the template with the bottom of the shroud exactly. I was very disappointed in the gap. I probably will order a pre-cut shroud and install it so I can look at my vararam without being disappointed. I used an adjustable razer set on about 1/2 inch or so. This was no problem since I had the condensor in sight the whole time.
