Default 08 Steering Box

Does anyone know if the new box will be a bolt on replacement for the one on '05-'07 vettes giving us the chance to have the new and improved steering?

I think the changes were more to the rack itself and some bearings/bushings than anything else, I think the idea of swapping things for the updates will end up being cost prohibitive.

If my steering rack ever goes bad, I'll replace it with an 08 unit.

100% And good steering feel in your car is vital as well.

All kidding aside, I drove my '06 around today, maybe 160 miles or so (mostly highway) and while I've always stated that my steering was WAY too light at slow speeds it has seemed to get better. And once moving I truly do LOVE it's responsiveness, weight and generally just the way that it feels. If the '08s steering is really that much improved over my already awesome steering then I simply can't imagine how great it must feel ...good job GM/Chevrolet/Bowling Green.

If anybody in Bowling Green is reading this, I'm ready to part with a fair amount of hard-earned cash to put an '08 rack on my '05 Vert, and I suspect I'm not alone. How about a kit, or a conversion directory?

All you need is a good contact. Call Felix at the BG plant and tell him Mortimer sent you. He will arrange for a package to be left for you at the guard house and you will in turn leave an envelope.

I'm hoping that it won't be too long before Gene Culley posts the part number for the '08 rack and the price. I think, and hope, it will be a direct bolt in replacement.

With the '08s out for some time now, has there been any news about the '08 steering rack? Are the parts available? How do the '08 owners like the new steering feel?

If someone bought one, someone wrecked one. Try a good junk yard, sorry, auto recycler.

Hi there,

Someone called me the other day and I priced it and I don't remember the cost. It is currently available.

I can't see why it wouldn't work? All of the other attaching items are generally the same part number, so why wouldn't the rack work?

If anyone is interested send me an email. I will give you free shipping so we can find out the real answer.

Thanks, Gene.

Interesting, What is the price?
I wonder what one would need to do to get the updated programming changes to the magnasteer system?

Ok, I'm working on this with one of my good customers Jim Durhan. The rack is 583.50 + shipping. We'll see what happens. He will probably pull the trigger as he's building himself an 08 replica 1 part at a time

Keep us posted about this Gene...$583 isnt too bad, I'll have to check out the labor with my Vette mechanic. I wonder if this would just be a removal and bolt-on?

I read this on Magnasteer...according to this, it should be part of the rack...can Gene confirm this?

"On GM Magnasteer applications, the whole rack must be replaced if the rack or control unit is defective because the Magnasteer unit is part of the rack. Handle with care because the permanent magnets inside the Magnasteer valve assembly and connector are fragile and can be easily damaged."
