Don't know why you would want to "take it out". Why not just unplug the antenna if you want to disable the thing. That way if you ever sell its there for the next owner.

Per my stereo install experience this weekend, it seems that when you remove the Onstar box, the computer goes nuts. It must be a pass-through path for the body-link network.

So, while my stereo worked great, I couldn't start the car...

It's a small / lightweight box, so you won't gain much by trying to remove it...

Just remove the antenna from the windshield. Slide it to the right and it will unsnap from its mount and then just disconnect the wires. Done.

Not if you don't actually discover that it was stolen until days later.
On Star only helps in a stolen vehicle situation if it's reported right away (before the perpetrators can disable it that is), I sometimes don't see my C6 for weeks on end so On Star might not help all at all times in that regard.

Wow, I didn't know it was so tied in like that, I really don't want On Star (or XM Radio) at all so this will continue to be a small dilemma for me and any future new Corvettes I might be considering.

Did you weigh it at all, it looks like it could be a couple of pounds or so but maybe not.

I'm surprised no one has an aftermarket plug or something yet to remove the system, they could make a small fortune. I have seen one to remove the radio or change it out to an aftermarket unit though.

The XM box and the OnStar box combined can't weigh more than 5 pounds. There just isn't much to them.

As for making a harness to remove them, I'm pretty sure you are in the minority. You can order a car without them, but all cars come with a radio. And I expect FAR more people want to replace their stereo with something else than care about removing the OnStar. The only reason I tried was that I wanted to mount an amp in that spot. And heck, I didn't even realize it was OnStar I was trying to remove until the car wouldn't start.

You probably could unplug the antenna wire to the box without upsetting the car's computer, and that would pretty effectively (although not completely) disable it.

Default OnStar is EASY to disable....

OnStar is EASY to disable....

a) Remove the one and only fuse for OnStar

b) At the back of your car, open the right rear storage compartment, the OnStar module is in there, you might have to pry up the carpet to get at the VCIM (OnStar Module).

c) UNPLUG connectors J1, J2 & J3 ...and UNPLUG the 2 antenna connections. One antenna is for OnStar's GPS signal. (If you have a 3LT car w/NAV, don't worry, the NAV has it's own GPS antenna!) The second antenna is OnStar's Cellular Phone Antenna.

d) The 4th connector, J4, is part of your car's Computer Network Data Bus. LEAVE that connector alone! If you unplug J4, your engine will not start. If you REALLY want the OnStar module out of your car THAT bad, you NEED to install a termination resistance! The "easiest solution" is to just leave the OnStar module in the car with J4 connected! The OnStar module will be TOTALLY DEAD!!

If you EVER plan on reselling your C6, just leave the OnStar module in place and re-connect the connections your previously disconnected, PRESTO, OnStar is re-enabled again.

You cannot order an 08 C6 without them. OnStar & XM Radio are standard on EVERY 08 C6.
