I don't understand why GM doesn't include an gear indicator in the dic for manual transmissions. I have found myself trying to take off in 3rd gear many times. I can't believe the computer doesn't know what gear you're in.
Gear indicator is really more of a manually shifted automatic thing like the sporttronic, tiptronic, etc. I've been driving maunal cars since I got my learner's permit (ages ago) and never had the issue ... drove a buddy's 2008 Z06 a few weeks back, seemed like the gate spacing was near perfect.
Maybe just a little more left pressure on the shifter when going for first?

Been driving sticks since early 60s, never consideed a need for a a "helper" like this.
I could have used one the first 2-3 days I had my 05 PR MN6, since it was my first time to shift a manual tranny in about 30 years, but I got used to it.
It does not happen too very often but for another ten cents they could probably indicate the gear on the hud. I have a colorado pickup for my company car and it does not provide the exterior temperature even though the vehicle is pretty well loaded. I know for a fact that the computer does monitor the exterior temps because the ac unit will not operate when the exterior temp drops below freezing.
You can set a rev limiter for each gear separately on a manual trans car with HP Tuners. That leads me to believe the car must have a sensor to know what gear its in, so maybe this would be possible?
But I don't need this mod - with 3.90 gears it doesn't really matter what gear you take off in. I take off in 2nd a lot if the trans won't go into first, which happens from time to time.
It would be nice, but I never had a car with it, so I don't miss it.
Lets talk compasses........
I have a compass in my mirror and a nav system in my dash! Do love that nav even if it pales in comparison to the nav system in my wife's Honda Odyssey.

I have 4.10's so the car will take of in 3rd if there is no slope.
I am new to the 'new' vettes, but certainly not new to stick shifts. I do not know if it is instinctively knowing what gear I am in or muscle memory taking over, but I always know what gear I am in.
I think a gear indicator for a manual would be like a 'engine on' light or 'window down' indicator. Maybe a 'wheels turning' gauge?
You are messing with us, right? Good one! You got quite a few guys.

It doesn't have a sensor (except for reverse), so it doesn't know what gear you're in until you're moving. Then it can calculate the gear from the known values of engine RPM and rear wheel RPM. But this doesn't do any good when you're sitting stopped at a light and slip it into first. Or third, as the case may be.
If your coming to a stop light you should be changing down through the gears anyway, you should be making 2nd gear your last selection as you come to a stop and then it's a natural thing to push the stick forward into first gear!
Anyway I can't be bothered to change gear so that's why I have a A4!

There is an engine on indicator - Tach and a wheels turning gage - speedometer I am looking for a top down indicator though.....
