Default TM disable

These new tunes that are out there for the A6's that disable TM (torque management?). Can this prematurely damage the trans or rearend? I have this tune & it is such a dramatic difference now I am getting concerned.

A friend spoke with a reputable transmission specialist (a forum sponsor) that exact question. Their response was that it may actually be BETTER for the transmission, in that it gets into gear quicker and therefore less wear and tear on the whatchamacallits that shift the gears (oh yeah, I'm quite a mechanic).

Logically, there's more stress on the output shafts, but at sub-500 rwhp and street tires, I dont think there's much to worry about. 600 hp and slicks, and you probably want to upgrade things.

PS: glad more A6ers are getting around to tuning out the TM. Makes a world of difference.

Default can t.m. be partially improved on a6

i have an 08 a6 with 4000 miles and sometimes when accelerating easily the 2 to 3 shift is really slow and makes the car feel like i let off the gas. i am anxious to get the t.m. dialed out but am concerned as you are about longevity and driving in the rain. was wondering if these tuners could do a partial reduction in the retard or whatever is done, instead of a car that has almost all retard removed and therefore hits too hard on shifts.

I had my A6 tuned along with AR headers and tune. Now my car is over the top, i can't get on it without fear of wrecking it.

Going from a slow roll if i nail it, the car just slides all over the road, no way i can nail it with other cars around me! I'm hoping a more sticky tire can help.

There are several settings in the Trans TM section (using an HP Tuner). Two which cause the most drastic changes, Upshift and Downshift. I have a Z51 with stock SuperCar tires and never ever came close to a 2nd gear spin before I removed the TM. First I did only the Upshift. The car would now always spin going to 2nd at full throttle, and you can't hear the tires spin. If you are on a curve, it will kick out a little. Then I turned the Downshift off. Going say 30 MPH and flooring it, the car would spin going into 1st, then upshift and spin going into 2nd. If you are on a curve scary stuff. I drove it around for a week afraid to punch it below 40 mph. Then cooler weather hit (70's ) I was even more afraid of it. So I have enabled the Downshift TM. I am beginning to wonder if TM was put in as a safety feature and not to protect parts under warranty. I may disable Downshift when it warms up again, but it's only the initial gear that is impacted and I personnally think it's too hard of a downshift when it hits 1st gear.

I bought HP Tuners, so I can turn it on and off at will. A nice convenience.

I will probably turn TM back on for the winter, but there is a BIG difference between how shifting reacts in D vs S. D is just slightly more aggressive, while S is very aggressive.

Also, I NEVER floor it in wet weather - regardless of how it's tuned. Learned the hard way with a close call.

I guess I am the only guy that didnt like the TM turned off on my 06. I have 315s and with the tm off it seemed to shift too harshly for a DDer.(too much head jerking) With the stock shift points it probably is better since the car shifts at such a low RPM. However, If I feed the car throttle from a dig rather than mash it, the A6 with my gearing is still very fun but more civilized. With the TM off the car does feel more snappy though. My 2 cents

Great info, guys. Makes me want to go out and buy an HP Tuner. By the way, is there a separate charge for getting the HP Tuner to also do the trans as well as the engine? Or, is it all inclusive?

Wow, lots of options on the hptuners site. I'm not sure I understand everything I would need to start off with.

Anyone experienced with HP tuners have any advice on what someone like me (no mods, yet, maybe cai soon) should look for? I've got an 07 A06 C6.

First of all, where did you get the tune package? And second, how much does it cost?

It's just kinda scary getting on my C6 a6 from a roll with traffic around, i like to give it a short WOT burst from a slow roll. Before my headers tune and A6 tune if i was doing 20mph and nailed it would go sideways just a tiny bit, now with my mods its just out of control!

Don't know if my Z06 swaybars are having a effect from a slow roll or not? My car ran very strong when it was stock, but now it's just insane.

Dude, simple. Just dont go WOT when on wet or very cold pavement or on corners. I wouldn't do that whether I had traction control on or off. Definitely don't be doing WOT with traffic around - not fair to the other drivers you are putting at risk.

If it makes you feel better to turn it off, by all means do so. But that isn't a license to go WOT and not get yourself in any trouble.
