I tried the search but didn't find a solution. Can anyone tell me the secret to removing the muffler/axle pipes? I dropped the h-pipe and lowered the sway bar. I got the drivers side out fairly easily. The passenger side has me cussing Before I resort to brute force, is there a secret to gently remove it w/o damaging anything?
Thanks,
Buddy
On the 05 A4 cars, you have to cut off about 6" the muffler lead pipe that joins with the H pipe on the pass side to get it out. Just use a cut off wheel on a die grinder and it takes about 10min.
I am attempting to put the ZO6 exhaust in a 2005 A-4. Got the old ones out but I've decided to quit for tonight. I am way too frustrated to accomplish anything now. I can't get the 3" pipe to fit in. Can anyone lend some advise? I am almost at my wits end with this thing.
The car needs to be high enough so the rear suspension hangs down but you also need enough room to twist the muffle and pipe assembly. Unbolt the two rear sway bar bushing bolts and the two nuts. Then you can pull the sway bar down enough to get the muffler out. I'm not saying it's easy but you don't need to cut a $500 muffler to get it off. If you were replacing just the gas tank the mufflers need to come off also and I would not want to buy new one's because I cut them off.
Loosen the 4 bolts on the rear cradle that holds the trans, diff and rear suspension to the frame and you can gain about 1" more clearance which is a night and day difference. I did this when removing my '08 Z06 exhaust and installing it on my '06 A6.
