I did the Bonneville 100 2 years ago; it was a lot of fun but very very hot and too far for me to drive from the Bay Area for a weekend or I'd do it again. The higher the speed the more safety equipment required.

I know Richard Hille will be out there in the Carpenter Motorsports Camaro, running Unlimited class at the SSCC. It's a fairly fast car, wink, wink.
Not the most exciting event to watch on TV, but vettl83 is right on- attending the one in Wendover in June is a guaranteed good time.
And there's nothing quite like standing on the side of the road when the Unlimiteds go by at around 200 or so.

Cool! It's hot out there sometimes, and 2006 was no exception.
We took 2nd place in the 170MPH avg. class that year. I was navigator, and had 650HP worth of hot exhaust gases routed out my side of the car near my feet.
Glad we were going so fast, because my toes about roasted off!
There are a few folks from the Bay area that come down, and some of them are veeeeeeeery fast.
would my vert greatly limit my tech speed since it has no rollbar and hence only a 3 point seatbelt? IOWs coupes have the potential to be allowed to go faster than a vert right? Unless there was a rollbar available for the vert.

I got an update from someone who attended the Silver State Classic Challenge this weekend.
It was a rough day. At the SSCC, they run the 150 class first, and work down to the 95 class. Then they sweep the course, and run the fast cars- 160,170, and Unlimited.
Turns out, two cars in the 150 class had issues- both Vipers. One caught fire, which caused a delay, and another crashed (driver was fine).
This delay caused cars from about the 115 class on down, including all the fast cars, to not be able to run. Apparently it was fairly chaotic, from an operational standpoint, which is unfortunate, because it did not have to be. These things happen, and with good management on the part of the Race Director, so that these kinds of delays are kept to a minimum.
Very unfortunate for those who spent the winter modifying and building their cars, took the time off work, traveled to NV, and didn't get to run.
I am so glad I didn't go.
Hope to see some of the CF people at the Bonneville 100. My personal opinion is that the people who run the B100 run a much better organized and executed plan, ensuring the racers the best event possible.

I have ran the Silver State Classic last year, I highly recommend it to anyone who can attend, it was a great time. I did not see it televised anywhere, but here's a little in car teaser for you from last falls race.
btw, if you have racing licenses, they will not restrict you to 110mph on your first time out, as it was my first time there last year, but not my last!!

Curves, hills, lotsa fun. I ran 135 class there this year in the C6. It was a HOOT!
Thanks! I will
I have also been looking into the Pony Express (I think) in Nevada. It's 130 miles long instead of 90. I was pretty fortunate to have a film company ship my car out there, and fly me out with expenses paid in exchange to wire the car all up with cameras etc so when they said "Silver State Classic" I said.... "OK".

I have run Bonneville and the Pony X, both great events. Mike and Marsha Borders of MKM run first class events with the safey of the drivers always being number one.
I was at the event with my 19 year old son (rookie) to drive his first event. Due to the accidents and (Nevada Department of Transportation) NDOT's over reaching control we did not run. It was very hot out there on the road waiting for hours. The gentleman from Ely that sells the racing fuel at the start line drove all the way back into town, bought and brought out a bunch of cold bottled water and gave it to the racers. Having run this event many times in the past I have experienced NDOT's ability to turn a simple problem into a huge delay. Bottom line--No one got hurt and most of the cars got to race. Due to the good safety equipment the CEO of K & N, walked away from a nasty wreck in his Viper. www.sscc.us Ely is a really neat town and this is usually a very good event with a bunch of great cars and people. Out of the 143 entered cars there had to be at least 50 Corvettes

Reason: added words
I don't see how anything can be NDOT's fault. They close the road, and very detailed contracts and agreements are filled out as to how the races are to be conducted. Communications, tracking of cars, what to do in the event of a mishap, the list goes on........it's all covered, and worked out in advance.
I know what's being said from the promoter's side, but the facts are that other promoters run these types of events, and don't face these continuous issues with NDOT.
Any additional info should probably be via PM on this topic.
I ran the 140 mph and had a good time with all the good people in the race. Yes it was hot and we had to wait a long time to start and a lot of racers did not start.
Steve and Gail you are doing a great job.I know it takes a lot of work and dedication to put on a event like the Silver State Classic Challenge,
THANKYOU FOR ALL YOU DO TO MAKE IT ALL POSSIBLE!!!
Jerry Mall apologized at the awards for crashing his viper. He felt bad about the proublems of the day.
JERRY NO APOLOGY NEEDED! This only proves that sheeeit happens to the best of us.
Lets focus on what we have to lose or gain.
We could lose the ability to race in Nevada, nobudy wants that.
we could gain a better working relationship with NDOT.
That would be the best thing for us all.
scottycards said, "I don't see how anything can be NDOT's fault." I can understand he can't see it because he wasn't there. Can't see what you can't see. For clarification, an NDOT road crew drove right past the sign THEY put up that said the road would be closed on May 18 from 5:00am - 4:00pm. They were on the course doing road sign work which caused the first delay. I guess the sign crew can't read their own signs. The first delay sure sounds like NDOT's fault to me.
After Jerry Mall's incident, (3rd car off the start line) NDOT wanted a full investigation since his car was close to the racing surface upside down and there was synthetic oil in the middle of the racing line. It took an extended amount of time to clean it up and when coupled with a new NDOT Supervisor, there were further delays communicating with her.
I'm sure things could have been smoother but it's too easy to play Monday morning quarterback. After Road Racing motorcycles for over 6 years, this event is amazingly well run. We really enjoy it and look forward to doing it again in September.
It's very unfortunate and disappointing that 40 cars could not run the event. They were unable to run the Unlimited, 180, 170, 160, 105, 100 and 95mph classes. Only 12 cars of the 28 entered in the 110mph class made it off the start line. All of those competitors were offered some sort of compensation but I do not know what the extent of it was. I felt really bad for them.
It was a great weekend for us but we feel somewhat guilty for having such a good time when others had their misfortune. But.....'That's Racing.' I'm sure the September event goes much better.
BTW ==> Congrats jcnsandiego on your 4th place finish! Very impressive! Averaging 140.0775mph for 90 miles!
I listened to my Navigator.....(I'm married to her) and we won the 115mph class. She gets the credit. It's the only time she has ever told me to "GO FASTER" in the Vette!
