I did the A6 342 gears a couple weeks ago. Makes it even funner to drive. You'll take about a 3mpg hit when cruising down the interstate but the fun factor is worth it.

It's nice having a 6th gear that's actually good for something, huh?
Yes, that is true but a 3.42 in a manual transmission car isn't the same as one in an A6 car.
Wow! glad you posted this. I always assumed you could use the stock diff from an MN6 in the A6. So the 3.42 differential for the A6 is only available as aftermarket part? If so, who makes them besides DTE?

Good finally meeting ya. How about that storm that crept up on the show!? Did you see that huge branch that seemed to have fallen on the JSB coupe in the West side of teh course?

Thanks.
Nope, they're two different units.
I bought mine from RPM Transmissions (they're a vendor here on the forum) and what they do is take stock units and upgrade the gears in them. I'm about to buy another stall converter and would highly recommend them.

Did you have a chance to run the Z yet??
Nice meeting you too. Yeah, it was a zoo getting out of there. I didn't see the branch, that would suck. Nope on the Z yet, that would be illegal
I figured you and the Z stopped at GreatLakes Dragaway on the way home!
...about 6th gear. I find it useable with my stock gears at anything over 50. I only have intake and exhaust on an LS2...why do so many feel that 6th isnt usable until you get gears? Its overdrive...and thats seems to be how it works stock.
I am trying to find a local with 4.10s to get a "feel" them!
im looking to put gears into my 08 z51 A6 , any feed back and opinions would be a big help thanks

Chuck CoW
Chuck,
For those of us not on the east coast who can't take the time away from the office to come out to you...
I don't suppose you travel like Spin does, do you?

Awwww...Dude! Yeah, but......Jee Whiz..I've been traveling for 9 months!! Gimme a break!
Here's the deal....If you're on the west coast, I'm presently working with 2 shops out there.....One, in Chandler Arizona (Phoenix) and the other in Corona California.....Possibly another in northern California.
We could easily arrange a "REAR END PARTY" (hey now!) and a Travel n- Tune deal in the fall.....
The weather sucks here in the winter and I love to travel!

Maybe it's because of My Maggie with all the down low tq!
I'm running 3.42's and they're really not too low at all. With the exception of higher freeway rpms there's almost no difference as to how they feel.
If anybody's curious as to how much higher the rpms are, do a search on my name as I started a thread a while back showing the different rpm/mph values.
Chuck and I discussed the 373 idea while we were tuning my 346's. After driving my car a while now, I think the 373's would be awesome on a car you didn't do any traveling with. How long before we see an A6 410 beast!!
If you do a search you will get a wealth of information. Unfortunately you will have to weed thru all the BS to actually learn anything. You're best bet is to call this number and ask for Chuck.
what is the difference between the different gears? i know that 4:10's are only good from a stop. i would like something all around better..i do not track the car
thanks for all the input
I wouldn't say 4.10's are only good from a stop. I have DTE 4.10's and I'd say they are good in all gears. Before the 4.10's 6th gear was only for cruising. Now I have power to sapre in 6th and can usually pass without down shifting. There are a lot of good places to buy gears. Phil at DTE treated me right.
