If you do a search you will get a wealth of information. Unfortunately you will have to weed thru all the BS to actually learn anything. You're best bet is to call this number and ask for Chuck.

I've had both 3.15 and 3.42 gears in my A6 so allow me to chime in.
Performance-wise at the track or just driving around town, both will be an excellent improvement over the stock 2.56 or 2.73 gears. There is however virtually no difference between the 3.15 and 3.42's as to how fast it'll run and I have the timeslips to back it up.
On the freeway the 3.15's will get slightly better gas mileage than the 3.42's, but the 3.42's will make 6th gear very responsive to the point where if you need to pass somebody you'll be able to do it without having to downshift.
I went from 2:73's to 3:15's with great results.
I felt sorry that I didn't install 3:42's but Subfloor has confirmed that there is basically no difference in 1/4 mile performance. Thanks for that Christopher.
With the price of gas going up, install 3:15's and get the best of both.
what is the difference between the different gears? i know that 4:10's are only good from a stop. i would like something all around better..i do not track the car

Christopher is the only person on this forum that has done testing with both 3:15,3:42`s with a stall convertor and has backed up his testing at the track!
Thanks Chris for all the information and the track results!

PM me if you have any other questions.

Christopher, did you also have a stall converter installed with either of the above ratios? If so, for which set of gears if not both? Also, were your 1/4 mile times with/without the converter(s)?

That is true, but at least you'd know what the car came with originally.
Having it still on there however is probably a good idea as you'll be less likely to draw attention to yourself if the car ever ends up on a lift at a dealership.

Yes, I did have a 3000 stall converter with both of the rear ends and all of my times were with the converter.
