This is the one I liked the best. Has a much larger filter than the Vararam and is very easy to service. They were on back-order when I ordered mine and ended up with the Xcelerator from MTI (Honker copy). Also very high quality.

That looks like a nice inlet. However, you can break inlets down into Cold Air and Non-Cold Air. The Airaid is a Non-Cold Air inlet along with the K&N and the Halltech.. You can get close with the free ram-air and a shroud over it, but why not just go to a true cold air inlet like the Honker?

The problem with figuring out gains is that most people dyno with the hood open. This gives any inlet a cold air inlet. But as soon as you close the hood on the non-cold air inlet you start ingesting warm air from the engine compartment. We did some measuring and with the open shroud the non-cold air inlets got almost as cold as the cold air inlet but it took a few seconds to get there. The cold air inlet had cold air immediately.

I also went with the Callaway Honker, and would highly recommend it to you.

I like the Callaway as well. But the Vararam has good numbers too. It is just a matter of preference.

Ok, it's a toss up between Vararam and the Callaway Honker, but as I looked it up, how does it function? Is the Honker considered a cold air or ram air like the Vararam?

The Callaway Honker is considered a cold air intake.

I have finally decided. Honker it is. I will be ordering mine in the next 2 weeks. I read through all the instructions on Callaways site. Looks like a snap to install. The few ponies I may give up will be made up with more bolt ons later. I just don't want to deal with the numerous Vararm issues I keep reading about.

Honker on mine also, very nice fit. But it was a real PITA to get the shroud out and back in. Might want to have a friend there to help, an extra pair of hands helps!

Had the Vararam, sent it back and ordered the Callaway Honker.

Night and day difference in quality and fit.

Wow, the plot thickens - looks like the Honker may be the way to go.

Thanks again to all,

Jack

I (with help) installed the Lingenfelter Performance Engineering (LPE) CAI after buying it used from AintQik (he's going FI and didn't need it).

I didn't dyno before/after, but I did notice quicker throttle response throughout the RPM range and a slightly stronger "punch" at WOT compared to the stocker. SpinMonster also did a quick tune that night to give it a little extra punch. My butt dyno guess was about a 5 HP gain. Not too noticeable in a 400HP car.

That being said, once we added the ported FAST, it seemed to really be able to use that extra air.

I think SpinMonster said he felt a 30 - 40 HP difference from the butt dyno between when the LPE CAI and FAST were installed (1 day apart) and he tuned the car again. I believe from personal experience that the "high-flow" CAI becomes more important once you throw on other intake mods that require (or at least can leverage) better breath-ability such as the FAST.

Also, I LOVE the fit/finish of the LPE CAI. It looks like it should have come from the factory that way.

Some might also argue that it's a night and day difference in performance results between the two as well.

Sounds a little high but it is possible that, once moving, a car with a CAI, ported FAST intake and a tune could be making upwards of 30+rwhp more and certainly feel notably stronger, especially if it has other mods.

I bought one of these for my '08 after seeing what the Vararam looked like.

The halltech just will not fit on my '08 with LS3. The air bridge sits too high because the air filter is jammed up against the front. The hard PVC line will not meet the fitting correctly. Watched the installation video three times and tried installing three times.

I am now waiting for a Honker to arrive.
