Default Decesions, Decesions

Here's my dilemma:

I have a 05, Z51 6spd with the following mods, Halltech intake, long tube headers 1 3/4, high flow cats, x pipe, Corsa Sports. I just purchased an electric water pump and a 160 stat.

The car is driven 3-4 days a week and I plan on tracking it 3-4 times a year, time permitting. My goal is to get to 450-500rwhp and retain most of it's driveability some cam shake is ok.

I can't decide if I should stay with my set up and just improve on it, i.e. get my heads worked on, cam, intake and throttle body ported, and underdrive pulley all of this with a tune obvisiouly.

OR

Do the same but via L92/L76 setup.

I now I can do it either way but which is MOST COST EFFECTIVE. Money is a little tight right now as I am starting a new business.

Input from tuners, forum members that have either your advice is welcome.

From one car nut to another thanks ahead of time.

And no NOS for me.

Do a search on the L92/L76 swap and you will see some nice results from it. It is without a doubt the most cost effective choice when deciding on H/C. I honestly cannot recommend a specific cam to go with the L92/L76 combo so hopefully someone else will chime in. Or you can discuss things with a local tuner. 450+rwhp and good street manners should not be a problem, depending on the cam specs.

Default Cost

Thanks for the reply K0bun,

Is that to say that the L92 set up is more cost effective? Meaning you don't think I can do it with a ported fast/throttle body, cam, underdrive pulley?

Just playing devils advocate, but on a serious note dollar for dollar which is the way to go? And why?

Thanks ahead of time.

Hitting your goals of 500rwhp without head work is going to be very difficult, ie; almost impossible. 450rwhp is possible but the size of the cam may not have very subtle street manners. With the L92/L76 top end and the correct cam some members are making 460+rwhp with completely docile drivability.

If your choices are ported FAST vs L92/L76 well that's a little different. A ported FAST + cam and bolt ons should get you in the 430rwhp range. You can then save up for a set of heads and hit 470-500rwhp. If you go with an L92/L76 + cam and bolt ons you could hit 460-470rwhp right out of the box. Then if/when FAST decides to make an intake for the LS3 you can get that and probably hit your 500rwp then. They are all good choices. It just depends on your finances and future goals.

To recap:

H/C + FAST will get you close to 500rwhp but is expensive.

L92/L76 + cam and bolt ons will get you 450-470rwhp and is comparitively cheaper than the above option.

FAST + cam and bolt ons (no head work) will get you 430+rwhp for a little less than the L92/L76 swap.

Thank K0bun,

Looks like the L92/L76 with appropriate cam is the way to go.

As opposed to getting my 243 heads ported and and cam.

Since I have your attention do you think I can do that (L92 setup) with out fly cutting pistons or am I being cheap and I should just go ahead and do it.

And is it worth porting the L76 dollars to horse power wise.

Thanks brother,

cya

For my L92/L76 combo with cam, I paid $1817 including shipping from Texas Speed & Performance. Though the heads are non-ported with the Texas Speed upgrades. With installation I will be just a tad over $3000 total.

Fore58,

Thanks for the info. Gland to hear the weather is getting better for you, Gustav is heading to Gulf of Mexico. I'd love to hear more about your car i. e. bolt ons etc.

And can I ask you cam specs and will you be needing to fly cut, also do you plan on exhaust porting before install?

I'll be doing this in parts as I just spent $925. on a set of F1 super cars for the rears. I have the Zo6 quarter panels. It's lowered, I get many compliments. I'll post pictures once I figure it out get the car washed and have some time.

Thanks ahead of time brother,

Sorry NYC6 if I misled you. At this time, my heads are being milled 0.020 but I'm going with the stock gaskets....taking my mechanic's advice. I can always do upgrade gaskets later. I think the majority of L92/L76 combo with cam are around 450 rwhp. I have the 224/228 .581/.588 114 LSA comp cam. My car already has the Melrose 1 7/8" and VaraRam. The results will be posted upon completion. It could be 1/4 mile or dyno results.

CYA,

We are not sure about rather or not to fly cut....the clearance will be checked upon installation. However, according to forum member the clearance will be in question with this cam. I'm trying to keep this project cost effective, so the exhaust porting is not on the menu for right now. Here are the specs: 224/228 .581/.588 114 LSA. Just keep an eye on my next post regarding the installation results.

Here's the write up of my L92 conversion. Total of parts was about $2000, after I sold all my old parts, the entire job cost me about $500, with SpinMonster and I doing all the labor.

Thanks Craigster05,

Too bad you guys aren't close. I'm not mechanicaly inclined but I guess I could save money and sell my old parts.

Question can you give me a ball park of what a shop should charge for the install and fly cutting if needed.

Thanks ahead of time,

CYA
