Default Open Discussion on Wheels

First off Spinmonster is not allowed to post. Lol. I already know what he is going to say. Neither is PowerLabs. Lol. Just kidding. This is a serious question which may open up some discussion that would help people later on.

I love my wheels. I really do.

Problem is my car makes a bunch of power and 20" wheels are almost worthless. No 20" tire is going to hook with my car. I thought I would just enjoy knowing I have a bunch of power but I mean come on. I'm not going to discuss racing of anykind here juse use your imagination. So, do I sell my wheels and tires in favor of running some nice 18s all year round? Or, do I just widen my old factory fronts and run slicks in predator mode? Most times I'm going to track the car I'll have time to swap wheels and all that but how many of you started life thinking you were going to do this then just said the hell with it and left the ET Streets on all year? Like I said I REALLY love my look but my car will be lethal on ETs. Right now I'm picking my butt till the top of fourth. I guess before I put money into widening I'd like to hear some thoughts. Wheels are pretty mint now, I got the sensors all fixed up, so I think I could get some decent change for them. I dunno.

Ding ding ding!
I drove a friend's 780RWHP car with 20 inch rims on the back. It was *stupid*. Wheelspin at 110MPH. If I were you I would sell those and get a set of CCW wheels in 18 x 10F, 18 x 11R; they will fit perfectly, be reasonably lightweight, very strong, high quality, they will look good and you will be able to run some SERIOUS tires... You can also get them in that Black/Red color theme which is very tasteful, IMHO (I am getting the same done to my widened rims ). I am not going that route right now (I may still in the future) because by the time it is all said and done, with tires, mounting, balancing, pressure sensors, etc it costs 4 grand, and I have other things I want to spend my mod money on, but I think you should; it would make a world of difference.

I'm just doing street driving so not a direct comparison but I'm planning to run the Nitto Drag Radials in 20 inch on the rears all year around.

Don't drive it in snow and if I get caught in the rain it's flashers and 55mph or pull over until it passes.

So far the Nitto is only a 305. I'd have to change wheels anyway as mine are 13"s. It still wouldn't hook. If they release the 345 DR I'd run that too, but still would have to have a good tire for the track. I don't drive in rain not that I'm scared, I just don't have to so that's not an issue. Its just a matter of selling these wheels and getting new ones or running the po' boy slicks when I need to. Hmmm.

And my rears would have to be 18x12 or 13. I got the big butt mod.

Go CCW 18's, Pilot Sport cups, Hoosier R-6's, or Toyo R888's.

I've been very happy with my CCW 140s 18x10 & 19x11 on my C6 coupe. John at CCW can certainly provide the needed wheels for you.
Unfortunately the KDWs do not have a 325/30R19 so I went with a 295/35R19 rear, they work well but I don't have your horsepower either.
Hoosiers, PS Cups, Toyo, etc. Also Nitto is showing some new tires on their site with a Feb. 09 availability. A Nitto NT05 335/30R19 (the new series) should fit on the rear, I may try those with some proper front sizing on my car.
Good luck on your quest.
Joe

ps: your car does look the ballz

I would keep those wheels and setup another combo for when you want to stick it to the ground (and those pesky ricer turbos that Guy tells me are worse than flies in CO).

I have the Z06 widebody rear and am looking at CCW 18X11 (or 11.5) for fronts and 18X13 rears.

Default 20" wheels

I don't get this thread. What is the problem with 20" wheels for autocross?

Two things weight and adhesion. 20" rims in general are heavy, unless you can find a forged one piece magnesium or carbon fiber rim; very expensive though. And you are very limited in compond choices for that size tire. Hence not the best set up for auto cross.

Hope this helps,

CYA

Not to mention that rotational weight is far more important than static weight. Acceleration and braking are both affected, so autocross wouldn't be a good choice for 20" rims. To compound this, the further outwards the weight is (exp. tires), the greater affect the weight has. I can't think of any situation where 20" rims would be advantageous.

CYA identified two good points. One, 20" wheels will be heavier unless you use exotic materials (which are still heavier than a smaller diameter wheel of the same materials). Two, tire choices are better with a 19" and even better with an 18". Always try to go with the smallest wheel wheel diameter that will clear the brakes you have (or are intending to use).

Here are the tires you need. I guy I know got a 1.3 60 foot with these in his 800 rwhp twin turbo c6z06.

I dunno how they will handle on curvy mountain roads though...

I would not run ET Streets on the street as a daily driving tire. I drove to the dragstrip in my 350z on ET streets on the highway, and it was not fun.

I thought we could NOT run 18's on the back of these cars?

Sure you can. Plenty of people do, especially at the track.
