After putting my heads back together after replacing bent valves, I am just finding out that I may have to take the head to a machine shop to get the valves seated/lapped? Is this true?
The intake valves are the identical part, the exhaust valves are the same size, but may not be the identical part. Is there any case when seating at a machine shop would not be necessary?
I feel quite frustrated that I did not even hear of this in all of the research I've done over the past months. Even searches now on the forum do not return any information regarding this....

anytime you have bent valves the seats should be inspected also as they too could be damaged, also the guides and piston surfaces...sop......
Ugh, so a machine shop is going to be required... Some have suggested that I would be able to do the lapping myself on the cheap, but with prior bent valves it seems that there are other things that will need to be checked...
Anyone have any idea what this could end up costing?
Quick test would be for you to get some lapping compound and try to do yourself. If you find a lot of uneven lapping marks, you have no choice but to have the heads worked on. Price could be all over the place if seats or guides need work.

My guess would be a few hundred bucks. Every thing that holds the valve needs to be inspected to make sure it didnt warp out of tolerance. Youre better off leaving this job to a professional.
